Exercising the generator

I realized I haven't run my generator for several months now. How often and how long should it run for best longevity?

It's the big Onan 12.5kw unit.

Thanks!

joe

Generally you should run the generator at 1/2 load for a minimum of 30 minuets about once a month. 45 minute to an hour would be better.

The reason to run for so long under some load is to warm the windings and drive any moisture build up out.

Also get the engine oil up to temperature and drives out the moisture.

I went just over 2 months without running mine, and the batteries were dead.

Did mine Saturday. 1/2 hour with one A/C running. Before the 1/2 hour was up, I had to go outside where it was warmer!!!!!!

Which batteries? We're full-timers, connected to shore power, so my batteries are always topped up.

Yes, the chassis batteries. There's the switch on the dash that pulls juice from the house batteries if the chassis batteries are dead.

Ran the generator for about an hour, with a couple of the AC units running (it's warm here today in SW Florida). That should take care of it for a month or so.

Hi! With 10 & 12KW Gensets, the amount of load on them does not matter. They are a one speed Genset that load has no bearing on how it runs, unless of course you overload it. The smaller Gensets, (I believe 7.5 and below) do need a load put on them. paul

How about that! Everyone is saying 1/2 Hr run time at at least 1/2 load. This has to be a first with so many agreeing on the same thing! We are making progress here!!!
