EZ-Pass question

Those that use the NY thruway (I90) are we charged as a tractor trailer? Just got my statement and had a $55 charge for that road , that was the MH and Toad. Called the Ma. ez-pass office and said we're charged by the height weight and # of axles. Is it cheaper to just pay cash?

NY Thruway is a particularly expensive road that I try to avoid if possible. I know when I got my EZ Pass it was registered as an RV and when you go through the axles are counted. I have had a few shockers too, I think the Ohio Turnpike was another surprise last year.

No!! They charge more, without the pass.


I just crossed the George Washington Bridge, I 95 northbound and was charged $60.00 EZ Pass. I think it is $74.00 without a pass It is a one way toll, but wow.


I am over 8500 lb's with a toad.


I did run the NY Thruway express lane tolls with a bad EZ Pass last year and was charged $18.00 for the whole road. The camera only takes a picture of the toad plate and they billed that pass ( it was in the foil bag ). I paid that because it was less then the toll for 4 exits with the whole rig.

It's cheaper to unhook and drive the toad through separately. Avoid the NY Thruway if you can.

I thought of that but I dolly tow. It would still be cheaper but the NY City roads would bounce my dolly into passing cars.

Yep. Thruway isn't the only one who's sticking it to the truckers (and also the RV'ers). The Bay Bridge across the Chesapeake, the Delaware Memorial Bridge and others are part of the big gouge. We check tolls on line for connected and separate and when there's savings we disconnect, drive thru the toll, drive 100 yards past the toll plaza then hook up. We've never been questioned and if we are, we'll drive across separate. It's obvious that it's not the cost, but the principal of the whole thing. When we cross the Mackinac in Michigan, the toll is the cost for the RV plus the cost of the tow, exactly as it should be.

As long as people put up with this nonsense, we'll continue to get the shaft. Call it a waste of time, but I call it a one person protest and will continue.

You have to call ny ez pass and get yours setup for mh plus toad. They gave us 2 separate transponders, 1 for just the mh and the other for when we have the toad. It is cheaper, otherwise it treats the toad as a trailer and charges accordingly

I for one use the EZ-Pass to save from stopping and then to reaccelerate my big gas consumer motorhome to the proper cruising speed !
If I'd unhooked before toll and rehooked just past the toll gate, what would be the advantage of using that EZ-Pass ?

You guys who talk about un hooking and re hooking after the toll are not talking about the George Washington Bridge, or any NY city bridges for that matter. It is one of the busiest bridges in the US with no " High Speed " lanes or places to pull over. If you stop, Homeland Security will be at your door in seconds. Once over the bridge you enter the concrete cannons of the Bronx. The 4 foot shoulders are littered with bottles and car parts just waiting to bite your tires.


I have talked to EZ Pass and have the correct pass. If you look at the Port Authority website, the pictures next to the toll rates show a MH with a car behind it.

NY EZ-pass website indicates height and # of axles determines toll cost, weight appears immaterial. There is a 5% discount for EZ-pass users vs, cash payment.

NY State offers 3 EZ Pass's.


NY/NJ Port Authority,( Bridges and tunnels between NY and NJ )


NY Metropolitan Transportation Authority ( Bridges and tunnels within NY city )


NY State Thruway Authority ( as it's title described ).


I have the Port Authority one because I'm from Long Island and it discounts the Staten Island bridges.

I was wrong , there are 5 Authorities issuing EZ Pass in NY. 2 are way up north.
