EZPass for motor homes - no toad

What insight can you provide about whether a unique (I.e.not like the one I use for my car) EZPass tag is needed for a MH - where I'm not pulling a toad? Just picked up the new Sunstar and getting everything lined up. Thanks and Happy Holidays to all!!

In Fl. the Sun Pass can be used with the toad or without and on the toad by itself. You just have to have both tags on file with them.

I got caught in NY state using a car EZPass. I think some NY State thruway tolls have scales in them. The NY pass worked in NJ & PA. They sent me a blue tag to use, with or without toad.

State rules vary. In Delaware I have a separate transponder for the RV but when I use it, the toll plaza counts axles and charges me accordingly. THis happens in all states I've traveled through, from Illinois to New England and down the east coast. My only complaint is that when I go through a toll hooked up, I'm charged $10 or more than if I took the same vehicles through separated. A big rip-off of the truckers and we get caught in it. In fact, I unhook, and DW takes the toad through separately. A minor point for some perhaps, but I refuse to be victimized, large or small.

When I got caught, they charged me the highest toll, end to end but the photo only got the toad plate. It was less then the 6 exit fee, I would have been charged, with the M/H. I did not appel.

In Fl. I have an account for the MH and toad, two transponders. When I travel the few toll roads down here, after a couple of weeks, I go to the Sunpass site and print out the activity reports for both accounts. Any times I am charged multiple axle charges (four for the MH, no tag axle) or for the toad (HHR) I call the Sunpass office with my info and have them research what I consider discrepancies. I make sure they understand I am not trying to get out of tolls, just to be charged the correct amount for each transponder. So far, so good. check again and make sure (they are harried civil servants after all). A hassle yes, but sometimes $15.00 correction.

We use our Maryland 2-axle transponder in the MH because that is what we were told to use. Most states charge by the axle but PA charges by weight on its turnpike. We used it last summer on the NY Thruway without a problem.

I order my Virginia based EZ-Pass specifically for the RV. Car passes are white the coach is blue. The coach pass is associated with a recreational vehicle over 7000 pounds, at least that's my account reads. No problems with the toll roads in the mid-Atlantic area with and without the toad.

As noted earlier, PA requires a separate (commercial) EZPass account and transponder for any RV over 15,000 pounds. I also check my statement to assure accurate reads. We have only had one misread, but it was in our favor, so we kept quiet.

When I had my pace arrow in massachusetts , I got an ezpass for the Rv that was motorhome specific. They can tell by the plate # as campers start with an E designation. I believe for to the dual rear axle and gross weight( which they asked me about when I put it on my existing account)you are charged a different rate. If you can get by with a car one great, but wasn't worth a risk to me .

I have the Ohio EZ Pass and we needed to get one for the wife's car and also for the motorhome. The serial number it is registered to tells the rate because it is by axle, which I am always towing when on the turnpike. The Ohio EZ Pass is good in New York, Virginia, PA, and several of the eastern states. Not good in FL.

Connecticut makes the list, because they did away with the tolls!
Vermont doesn't have any, yet.
I read that N. Carolina is working on a system with S. Carolina to share EZpass. Once that happens, since S. Carolina networks with Georgia and Florida, the East coast will be covered by EZpass

I live in CT but travel to MA a lot so I picked up an EZPass for the toad from them and another one for the MH since I was there.

They asked about weight, asked if I would have the toad most of the time and I said yes. So whenever I go through a toll the one transponder in the MH handles both the MH and the toad. They said I could remove the toad from the MH transponder but I'd have to bring it to them (in MA) to have it reprogrammed.

I'm not certain but I don't think I could use the MH one and the toad one while it's being towed. That's why I went with the option I did (toad is always attached).
