Angry Fan Belt too Short

Hello,

I own a 1996 Discovery. I ordered a new fan belt thinking it might be time to replace it. After trying everything to get the new one on, I decided to put the old one back on and it slid on wirh out any problem. So, frustrated, I measured both and discovered the new one is 1-1/2 inches shorter. I then checked the green stripe p/n with Cummins and Dayco. All three cross to each other. My owners manual gives the cummins p/n #3911562,and it crosses to Gates p/n K0 80575HD. Without going on and on, has anyone had a problem with incorrect listing of part numbers by manufacturers. My next step is purchase another belt the same lengh as the one I took off. Glad this did not happen on the road.

It is possible that, sometime in the past 20 years, someone has replaced some belt driven item with one that has a larger pulley, or a tensioner with a different travel.

I would take your old belt to an autoparts store and have them measure it on a belt measuring tool then get the correct belt for your application.
They can match it up from belts in stock. Be sure the new belt has the correct number of ribs.

I had this recently on my 1997 Ford F53 chassis. One of the belts was too short. I took the old one down to O'Reilly Auto and visually matched it up with one of the same length.
