Firan DP

Hi Folks.
I am up in Ontario Canada.I am looking at buying a Firan DP. Cummins with an Eaton tranny. With 100,000 Kms ( 60,000 miles) If any of you seasoned rv folks have any thoughts, I would like to hear them. Anyone know if parts are still readily available?

Welcome to iRV2.

The Eaton transmission would be a real worry ( JMHO ).

Also you didn't mention the year of the coach, or the chassis manufacturer, and being from Ontario you know all about rust issues. Rust and Rot never sleep, and if the chassis manufacturer is no longer in business , finding replacement parts for a rusted out chassis component could have you sidelined for a long time.

Firan would be far down on my list or preferred brands. Both company and chassis builder are gone, I think. The chassis probably has mostly industry standard parts, though, e.g. axles, engine, tranny, radiator, etc. The chassis builder buys all those things and assembles them onto the frame he builds. Parts ought to be available IF the rig is not too old, but I suspect we are talking more than 15 years old? Maybe 20?

Thanks guy's for the advice. These forums are a gold mine of information. The rig is on a Spartan chassis. It's a 1994. My main concern is the parts availability. I have a large metal fab shop in Toronto. So the unit would be stored inside for the rest of it's time. They are looking for $20,000 Canadian dollars. It seems the Cummins motor is very well supported, the tranny might be another issue!

Just check the underside closely. Not every motorhome was driven in the salt just because they are owned by people living in the snow belt. Most motorhomes in Florida have seen way more salt than mine from Pennsylvania. Cause it's stored all winter long.
