Fluid Woes
Time to do my annual maintenance. Got all my filters and engine oil. Since it is 24 months on the transmission, time to service it. Finding Transynd is practically impossible around here. I called every parts jobber and truck shop. Nope. GM and Chevy dealers, nope. Nearest place is a Freightliner shop 45 miles from me. So, tomorrow a 90 mile round trip to get fluid.

Yep, TranSynd is only sold by Allison and even though it's made by Castrol they don't sell it.
I went to a local Allison shop and bought 6 gallons for about $33 a gallon last time I needed to change.
There are other fluids that are approved by Allison, some are less expensive if you can find them. None of Amsoil's are approved even though they claim that it's
designed to "meet" the spec's they aren't haven't been tested or approved.

Some interesting info on Transynd and Allison transmissions at http://www.irv2.com/forums/f125/form...eer-89293.html
Tom has some interesting info on the fluid, change limits and filters. The thread is long, but has a ton of information in it that's not easily found in other places.
As to availability, check truck stops and places that sell and/or repair school buses, as many of them have Allison's in them.

If you have an Allison with Transynd, you don't have to change it every two years. Got that information from Allison's toll free number, check it out.

There are a number of other TES295 rated fluids you can use in place of Transynd. Mobil Delvac Synthetic is one.
And chances are you are not due for a change at 24 months if you already have synthetic fluid in it. For example, the Allison 1000MH is 48 months of 150k miles if you had Transynd from the git-go. See the official Allison Fluid Change Calculator to determine yours:

I knew about Delvac, but that is also not to be found around here.
I do have Transynd in the unit already, BUT I have an extended service plan (Easy Care) that requires transmission fluid change every 2 years. I don't want to give the plan an out if I ever have a problem.
I also have to change the oil & filter, the air cleaner and fuel filter every 12 months on the generator.
The good news is that the Freightliner/Oasis shop had a price of 36.85 a gallon, so was cheaper than ordering on-line.
