Adamfolger,

Any high deductible extended warranty such as $1000 or more is for catastrophic losses only. You will seldom have any normal repairs needed where your high deductible will pay for itself unless you accumulate many broken devices or problems prior to scheduling the repairs.

That will not work for anyone that Full-Times such as myself or anyone that enjoys using their RV frequently.

My coach is well beyond the time-frame where a typical catastrophic loss would occur. If the coach is well maintained and taken care of which it is always because it's R HOME, I am less concerned about any major loss versus the typical losses that occur with old stuff breaking down.

Again, I will repeat myself in that once you have a catastrophic loss YOU have to prove to the extended warranty company that it was well maintained to their specifications otherwise they will deny your claim.

Regarding our trip to Alaska, I had a small set back in Coburg Oregon which didn't cause any delays as everything got fixed that I had intended to have taken care of PLUS a couple of unexpected item's.

See THIS thread.

Who is the winner here?

I would prefer the former!

Peace of mind is the only reason to buy these things. I'm highly risk tolerant, but not everyone is. If you've the money to buy new you probably have enough to self insure. It's your money, buy what makes you happy.

We bought a 2003 Allegro Bus in 2013 with 15,000 miles on it. It had some water damage in the roof that I found during a pre buy inspection. We negotiated with the dealer and I assumed responsibility for the roof knowing that I had successfully repaired similar damage on another one I had owned. Roof repairs are done and it doesn't leak now. All that being said, I suspected a coach that old with that few miles and roof damage had probably sat with no care for a long time. Based on that, I decided to buy a Good Sam extended service contract with a high deductible just in case there were engine or transmission issues. Last year, we had two semi break downs. Once, the bus would not start when we stopped for a break. Good Sam sent out a repair service, but they had a flat rate for Saturdays of $550. They could not find a problem, but did jump start it across the solenoid. Took it to a Tom Johnson's in Marion, NC, but they could not find any problems. It has started fine ever since, so I think I might have shut it down with it in drive throwing the transmission computer out of sync with the ECM. Had another issue at the same exact rest stop a month later. It turned out to be a clogged fuel filter. We limped to TTT Truck service in Florence and had excellent service from them. They worked us in and had us on the road shortly. Since then, I have had the coach to the Freightliner Custom Chassis service center in Gaffney, SC and had them change all fluids, belts, etc. and go check for any error codes. While that is no guarantee, I at least feel better about it. The coach runs great now and this will probably be my last year for the extended service plan. We all take some risk in our lives. BTW Richard, I also had the plastic coolant surge tank replaced with a new steel one. The plastic one was not leaking yet, but it did have cracks in it, so hopefully, I eliminated at least the risk of the surge tank letting go out on the road somewhere. Now, I carry extra fuel filters and belts along with me, so at least I will have some of the basic parts needed in a jam. We are leaving NC for Florida next week making our longest trip to date in the coach. Hopefully, we won't have a break down, but if we do, we will deal with it as it comes. We don't intend to stop traveling in our Bus. In fact, I hope to retire next year and put some real miles on it seeing this great country.

Goodness.............I reckon a lot of you insurance naysayers don't have homeowners insurance or life insurance to help your survivors because, after all, your house hasn't burned down yet and you haven't died yet!

We purchased our new MH in 2012 and bought a five year Cornerstone policy. Haven't had a ton of claims but they have paid them all without an argument. One AC problem, an auto step that wouldn't retract, new transfer switch, new slide lockout mechanism, and the generator had to be removed to fix an oil leak.

Probably are about even as far as the cost of the repairs versus the amount spent for the insurance policy but we have over 2 years left on the policy. Any additional repairs during the next 2+ years will put me money ahead.

But...............I hope I don't have to use the repair policy ever again since it is a pain in the behind to take our MH to the shop for repairs!

I didn't mean to be a naysayer. I however wouldn't give up something I enjoy over it either .

Those are entirely different stakes. We are not talking about your kids not having food or a place to live if your MH needs repair. At least I don't think we are.

Insurance has its best value when used to prevent financial catastrophe, not financial inconvenience. Of course there are always winners of this kind of lottery who get comfort and finical returns, but they are in the minority.

This is the first time we have purchased extended warranty on anything, including over 30 cars and pickups. Having owned multiple motor homes, bumper pulls, and fifth wheels and after reading all the problems coming from new motor homes, I splurged. I wanted a used DP but DW preferred new. We love the floor plan and being a gas unit hasn't been a problem. We live in it for three months in Colorado every summer. When the policy runs out, I don't plan to purchase a new policy.

We lived in CO for 12 years. We still visit Sister near Kremmling. My old body just doesn't do winters well anymore.

I bought a extended warranty as a splurge once, also. An all wheel drive that was very new for the Manufacturer. It was very cheap on supplier discount. You guessed it, not a single issue. Like you I would not have renewed it, nor sold the car for that reason alone.

That all said, you have have some plan for a catastrophic failure and the resources to recover.

You missed the point completely. I have no problem with the warranty companies making a profit or the price they're charging. My fixed income status makes me do a lot of soul-searching when it comes to this type of expense. I spent many years in High-Dollar Retail Sales (Sail and Motor Yachts) and dealt with far too many who wouldn't or couldn't understand why anyone should make a profit on their purchase.
I appreciate your input, and have decided to bite the bullet and ante-up. Love the lifestyle far too much to quit now.

I believe that wholesale warranties offer a engine/drive train only plan.

In 2010 we bought a 2000 Dutch Star to go fulltime in. Because of the age of the coach, I bought an ESP from Wholesale Warranties in Nov. of 2012 after having a major problem with GS. The WW policy cost $4100 for 4yrs. w/unlimited mileage and a $250 ded. Since purchase it's more than paid for itself, and I have almost 2yrs. left on it. So it's worked for us, and before the ESP runs out our coach will be checked out from stem to stern to have any problems taken care of.
