Ford Transmission
I am looking to purchase a used Class A. I have found info on the Workhorse transmissions(Allison) but cant seem to find any info on the Ford transmissions. I notice the gear indicator only has D,2,1. Does that mean it is only a 3 speed tranny. I know it has a tow haul mode. The Allison trannies on the Chevy 8.1 are 5 and 6 speed. Can you help me out??

If it has a Tow/Haul button, and its a Ford, it is a 5 speed transmission.
Earlier Ford's had 4 speed transmissions with OD OFF buttons.
Post the year of it and others will let you know.

thanks. So just to be clear if it has a 5 speed will it still say D,2,1,? I noticed the gear indicator on the 8.1 chevy Allison says D,D,2,1 (over drive and direct drive).

I have a 2000 Ford 4 speed.
It has P R N D 2 1. The end of the shift handle has OVERDRIVE printed on it.
Overdrive OFF is not Tow/Haul
I can't speek for the 5 speed.

Our 5 speed (2012) has D321. The 2005 model year was when they switched.

My 2012 Ford pickup has a 6 speed, with a tow/Haul button. 5th and 6th are both overdrives and 4th is a slight underdrive. I believe this 6 speed has made it into a few of the newer motorhomes. Maybe the ones I'm remembering were Class C's. I sure wish I had that 6 speed in our 33 ft Class A.

The Ford F53 chassis was updated to a six speed in 2016. I believe they also made some internal changes for additional durability as well but am not positive about that. The F53 chassis forum is a good source of information.

Ford Tranny
I have a 2016 Nemar with the V-10. It has the new 6 speed Tranny with tow haul. It works excellent. Seems to work like the Allison. Hardly ever use brakes going down hills and grades. Downshifts according to how much you start to brake. Outstanding transmission.

Good to hear, did you have it reprogrammed as it is my understanding that the two/haul had some issues on the six speed but that Ford recently issued new programming to make the tow/haul feature work correctly. (I have been looking at new coaches and trying to do my research.)

I had a 1999 Georgetown with the same transmission. It is the same as in a Ford F350.

On some roads you might wish to lock the transmission into a lower gear, thus the ability to lock it in 1 or 2.... in all other service modes you usually just leave the lever in D and let the on board system control the gear and shifting..
