Freak encounter with a new Thor Palazzo

Was visiting some friends and thought I was boring them to death about motorhomes when his wife says, “Lets go and look at one, I see them on the road and they’re cute”! Her husband looked at her like she lost her mind and frankly so did I!

Then I remember I thread I started here on the forum called “Your wife and the Motorhome”? Where I found to my surprise that the overwhelming majority of women mentioned the motorhome and wanted it first!

We go down to a dealer not far from their home and the first coach they walk up to is a new Thor Palazzo. We hadn’t even looked inside yet when Janice turns to the salesman and says “can I drive this one”? After a few minutes of palaver he walks in the dealership and returns with the key.

By the time he got back with the key we had seen the inside of the coach and Janice thought it was the most beautiful thing she’d ever seen. I’d seen pictures of the Palazzo but had not been in one. She was right, I was also impressed with the appearance of both the interior and exterior. It was a very nice looking motorhome!

I know from my research that the Palazzo is possibly the most written about motorhome on the planet and there seems to be a 50 - 50 split on those who love and hate them. I didn't tell them any of that because they could decide for themselves without my 2 cents.

So off we go with Janice behind the wheel. We were on the interstate going 65, went up hills and dales with good grades and swerved around country roads. The ride was smooth, the diesel quiet as was the interior. Janice was in heaven and Bob her husband sitting in the passengers seat was obviously enjoying the trip. And me, the great experienced motorhome man right? I was looking around for doors to drop off the cabinets, refrigerator to fall over or the diesel to blow up. I was thinking "come on, at least give me squeaks and rattles, you're giving me nothin here"! But I got none of those things! I don’t know what I expected but it wasn’t this!

Once back at the dealership I took the salesman aside and told him how surprised I was. He’s a salesman so I expected a sales pitch but didn’t get one. He like myself is well aware of everything out there but of all the things he could have said I was impressed by his answer. It may not be an exact quote but its close.

"The Palazzo has no options, it comes loaded and is $25,000.00 less than any other diesel pusher out there. You can fix it, change it and swap out a lot of stuff for $25,000.00!"

On my own I would not have looked at, ridden in or driven a Thor Palazzo diesel pusher. I’d not say I’m buying one but much to my amazement its on my list!

I drove it myself and was very surprised by its power and its handling. I was very impressed, even with the seating position. I'm a tall guy and seating can be a problem but not here. It really got my attention!

Great story. Thanks for the positive post.

The slide issues that made the Palazzo infamous have been much improved since the 2013 model introduction. What amazes me is a well optioned Palazzo has a lower MSRP than many gas RV's including the latest version of our Outlaw

Thanks again

So did they buy it????

A friend of mine just bought one last week. Curious to see it when he gets back for Arkansas.

She wanted too! Bob wanted to think about it awhile and drive it again in a couple weeks. Bob is also a "let me read the reviews" kind a guy as well"!

Their buying it would not surprise me at all. We all really enjoyed the experience and none more than Bob.

I was going over in my mind today what the salesman said to me at the dealership and couldn't keep from a little research. Hear's what he said; "The Palazzo has no options, it comes loaded and is $25,000.00 less than any other diesel pusher out there. You can fix it, change it and swap out a lot of stuff for $25,000.00!"

I believe the point being made is this.

The following motorhomes are all entry level bath and half models and all have the Cummins ISB turbo diesel 6.7 liter 340 HP engine on the Freightliner XC chassis.

The following shows the make-model-floor plan, length and price.

Thor Palazzo floor plan 36.1 37.7 length, price $225,450.00

Holiday Rambler Navigator XE floor plan 36U length 37.7 price $240,906.00 $15,456.00 more than Thor.

Forest River Berkshire floor plan 38B length 39.5” price $262,145.00 $36,695.00 more than Thor.

Coachmen Cross Country floor plan 404RB length 41.4 price $276,217.00 $50,767.00 more than Thor.

I'm not making any quality comparison by brand or that one has more or less problems to be fixed than the other. Only that they share the same Cummins engine and Freightliner Chassis.

You guys tell me what you think. Is the Palazzo at $15,456.00 less than the nearest competitor a bad bet at the price difference? I'd especially like to hear from Palazzo owners because if anyone knows you do!

pretty sure plazzo had to lower the price to get people to give them another chance...

look at how many are for sell on the rv trader..
when I talked to the rep She said that they really stepped their game up on QC. and that the slide out deal really hurt...

now they have double gears on the top

I'd buy one... can't be any worse than the rest out there... the real problem with all of them is gonna be the freightliner chassis..

the 50% that love them haven't been able to sell theirs

Wait, weren't all the posts regarding horrible things with Palazzo dealing with slides? So the test drive opened and closed the slides how many times?

Slides were out when we got there. They were closed for the test drive and opened again on our return. They worked fine and made a lot less noise than I would have expected. Seeing that full wall slide moving in and out was really something!
