Freedom 458 inverter/charger

Hi all,

I was tinkering around the MH getting things ready for our trip to Big Bend NP this week. When I went to start the MH---dead chassis batteries (11.4 volts) I am hooked up to shore power. I guess I don't know how the Freedom 458 (model 2010) really works. I thought it would charge house and chassis batteries. I don't have the inverter turned on at the control panel, thought that would just supply inverted power. The panel shows it is charging.

Can someone explain how it works?

Thanks, John

John, the inverter basically does two things to and with a 12 volt DC battery source. When an outside 120 vac electrical power source is connected the inverter will charge back the battery bank. If, and it sounds like your coach is not set up to charge both chassis and house battery banks from generator or shore power, you want this capability an other device can be added to do this for you.
When you do not have 120 vac source (generator or shore power) and want to run TVs, DVD Sat receivers, microwave, 120 volt receptacles, your inverter can produce this power from the 12 volt battery bank when turned on. You can even leave it turned on and be connected to an outside power source at the same time. If you loose shore power the inverter will automatically switch over to inverted power for circuits connected to it. Not all circuits in the coach will be powered by the inverter. The air cond.or heat pumps, water heaters, ref. are usually not connected to run off the inverter. I hope this will help you and if you want to learn more I can send links to sites that you can study.

RV Wizard,
Thanks for your help. It sounds like I will need to keep a float charger on the chassis batteries when The MH will sit idle for awhile.

John

John- You may want to add an Echo Charger:
http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?...16473&id=93959 to solve this problem (it "echoes" the charge signal to the start batteries automatically). These became standard equip on Alpine Coaches, and were retrofitted on quite a few as well. You can also google Alpine Coach Association, go to the Tech Library under Chassis & Brakes, and check out the wiring diagram for 2001 Batt Wiring. You'll see how the factory did the EC wiring once it was standard equip. If you have a battery isolator like is shown on the Alpine diagram, this is about as simple & bullet proof as you will find.

John, it's not the Freedom 458 you are having a problem with - it just charges whatever batteries are connected to it. You problem is that Monaco did not provide a connection from the house batteries to the chassis batteries, so the charge never gets there. In newer coaches they have a device called a BCC that connects and disconnects between house and chassis as needed to maintain charge, but yours doesn't have that device. Others have given you some alternatives, so I won't elaborate further.
