Fresh foam in drivers seat

Has anyone replaced the foam in their drivers seat?

I like everything about my seat and it's pretty high end (with heat and massage functions, etc).

However, the seat foam has sort of broken down and I'd like to replace it - as opposed to an all new seat.

Anyone know of companies that do this... or is it a DIY project?

Look for places that do boat cushions or repair marine upholstery. You might have to remove the chair to get it to them to redo.

If you're reasonably handy, it can be a DIY project. Find a place that sells foam in various densities. Buy some upholstery/fabric spray glue at a craft shop or fabric store. Temporarily steal your old electric carving knife from the kitchen and you should be ready to go.

Remove the seat so have room to work. Take the upholstery off the seat - it may be held in place with velcro. If not, it's probably hog rings - wire that looks a lot like the clips that hold romex to 2X4's. If the upholstery is mounted with hog rings, you'll need new rings and a pair of hog ring pliers to replace the upholstery. Both are readily available on line.

Once the upholstery is removed, look at the padding and decide what density foam you want to replace the old foam. The foam shouldn't be glued to the seat frame, but if the old is, you can use a knife to remove. Take the new foam and shape it (with the electric knife) to match the old, only higher. Often the seat is made from 3 or 4 separate pieces that are glued together. Just make a new seat using the old as a pattern. Glue as necessary.

Put the new foam on and trial fit the seat cover. If it's too tight, shave a little foam and and try again. Just remember the fit should be tight as the foam will collapse from use. Once the fit is good, velcro or hog ring the seat cover back on.

It really sounds harder than it is. I'm sure there are multiple You Tube videos of the process.

Does he do motorhome seats. Many car seat repair out fits don't mess with motorhome seats

Villa International manufactured most of the original equipment Monaco and Country Coach seats. They will not reupholster their own older seats. Seat building is now computerized with laser patterns and they do not have digital patterns for the older seats. They will sell you new seats.

zmotorsports in the Monaco section recently had his seats reupholstered and they look great. Pictures in post # 782.
He commented that his upholstery guy said never again!
