Newmar, because of the heavy construction has had front axle loading problems for years. In '98-'99 they had to upgrade a number of rigs to 275/80 tires. Don't remember the weights on our 2000 DSDP, but our 2002 DSDP only had 663# of CCC BEFORE we ever loaded a thing or got onboard.
Newmar did have Spartan install a 14,600# axle, but it was derated to 13,200 by the 275/70 tires. I have since replaced the front tires with 305/70's and new Alcoa wheels that are wider than the OEM.

I am missing something…my stock wheels! I have 275/80 LRH on my 05 4301 steers. They are mounted on 7.5” wheels. I just assumed these were the stock size as they exceeded Newmar’s 14.2K front axle rating (14,320) at max PSI. I knew Spartan rated it at 14.6K but Newmar downgraded it to 14.2K. I thought it must be something to do with the coach setup as it didn’t directly equate to the lower tire weight rating (14,320 v. 14,200). I’m now thinking Newmar downgrades it based on imbalance so you reduce the likelihood over overloading a single tire.
I checked the placard and the coach came with 295’s up front from Spartan. Hummm…someone before me was up to something. I have no idea why they replaced 295’s on 8.25” with 275’s on 7.50” other than tire cost or availability. Maybe fuel economy? This never came up in conversations with the original owner…hummm.
I’m still okay with my load limits but will definitely consider going back to 8.25” with 295/80’s. I would really like to run at 110 PSI and not 120 PSI up front.
I never would have caught this without being engaged in these types of conversations. I feel pretty silly I have had the coach for nearly two years and just discovered this! Better now than just after a tire replacement I guess.

Well, the deal with my rig fell through. I didn't like the price they held on to given there was virtually no maintenance records that were more than a year old and the song and dance they gave about it as a consignment earlier. Just didn't feel right at the price they held to.


I did learn a lot from this thread and now have contact info for Spartan and Newmar to get history and basic data for coach and chassis.
