Front Door Awning

Due to the rainy weather we frequently are subjected to in the Northwest (and the fact that our big dogs find the head too cramped for their body and four legs to turn around in!), my DW would like to pursue a front door awning for convenience and help keep the front inside drier when she or I take the dogs out.

I've researched the Dometic Oasis Elite Power Door Awning and Carefree Marquee Power Door Awning. Both will tie into the existing Dometic/A&E Weatherpro electrical control unit.

Does anyone have any experience having either one installed on their motorhome or as original equipment? Any comments concerning quality, installation, effectivness, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Tiffin uses both Carefree and Dometic door awnings on their coaches, and I've had Busses with both. Use caution if you get a Carefree as the one we now have does NOT have a remote control with it.

Regardless of what you get, be sure you install it far enough forward that the rain does not end up running down the inside of your entrance door. Tiffin recently shortened up the front cap and dash areas and when they did, the door awning was installed too far aft. I had to remove the awning and reposition it about 5" further forward to stop it from running water down the inside of the door. Since the awning must be installed over the joint where the front cap joins the coach sidewalls, they use a piece of black plastic 1/2" thick behind the awning so the awning carrier can span this gap. When I moved the awning forward, the front of the awning base hung quite far forward without support. I bought an additional piece of black plastic 1" thick and carved it with a hand grinder so it would fit closely to the contoured front cap just behind the windshield. Your install will depend on exactly where you decide to put it, but it's definitely not a bad job for someone who is reasonably handy. Just caulk everything very well as a leak in the awning will show up as a wet area at the bottom of your steps. Had an older bus with that problem and it took a while before I found it.

Good luck
