Fuel Economy - Gas
We picked up our new Canyon Star 3953 just 2 weeks ago. We picked it up about 475 miles away, and we were able to get about 7.5 mpg on the return trip to Louisiana. Can I expect to maintain this mpg or will it get better over time? Will it get worse? I must admit that the MH was basically empty, except for fuel, propane and about a 1/4 fill level on water levels. Since we have returned home, we have been busy loading our "necessities"... but I can't see this as adding more than a 250-300 lbs.
So... what are your thoughts/experiences?

My recent experience: 1999 Safari Trek. 454 GM gas engine. Weight 14,000 lb loaded towing a 5000 lb car trailer. 6500 miles from KY to California to Oregon & back. Speed 60-65 MPH. Overall 7.9 MPG not counting generator use.

Volkswagen??? I think not.... LOL. I am only looking for info in order to better plan my trips. I am rather a detail oriented person, and like to plan to the letter.

I have a 2008 38 ft. Workhorse and am full timing I have got as low as 5.5 driving into a headwind and as much as 9.5 on a flat road with a tailwind. We are loaded and pulling a 4000 + - lb. Wrangler. I only travel around 60 mph. Your millage may come up but you will offset it with the things you carry. I figure 7 mpg on average. So yes they do hemorrhage gas going down the road.

2007 coachman Mirada 30ft no slides. 7.5 - 8 mpg, 5 star tune. Head wind, tail wind, toad or not, always about the same.

We also have a large gasser, towing 5000 lb. of Jeep. Usually 6.5 to 7 MPG cruising at 60 MPH. Step up to 65 MPH and lose .5 MPG.

Hi,
You will get on the average about &.5 MPG however if you drive at 55 MPH you will probably get 8 or even 8.5.
I drive my 35 footer at 58 MPH or 2000 RPm and get between 7.5 and 8 towing a 2011 Ford Escape. Climbing hills it will go down but on the flat it may go higher.
When you purchase an RV gas mileage is nothing to concern your self with as it is what it is. Just enjoy it and have fun.

Same as everyone else, 2000 Allegro 30' 454 Chevy gas, pulling a 06 Jeep Rubicon Unlimited weighing around 5000 LBS. getting around 8-9 MPG. at 62 MPH. @ 2200 RPM's.

The OP's MPG is not bad and can be increased with experience.
We have a Workhorse W24 (24,000lb GVWR) with an 8.1l V8 and 6 speed Allison, carrying a 37' Class A. Our average over the last 15,000 miles has been 7.5mpg. That is average...low was 6.2 when we were doing short trips in SoCal traffic and high was 9+ in the miles of flatland in Western Texas.
Towing a car seems to almost have no impact on MPG = less than is easy to see computed.
Mileage is mostly impacted by:
1. Your driving speed...55 is usually better than 75.
2. Your RV's weight...lighter is better.
3. Speed control...cruise control on the flat land. But in hills, while goin up - let the speed drop a bit to avoid over reving in lower gears and coast down the backside, picking the speed back up.
It's only normal to consider how to save fuel dollars. Fuel is very expensive and there is no reason to burn dollars needlessly.

Use about 7 for planning. If you want decent padding, plan for 6. Plan to fill up before you drop below 1/4 tank if possible.

We owned a gas MH for 8 years. From new until sold we got 6 1\2 to 7 1\2 mpg.

We've a heavy '99 Damon 34' with 454 pulling a dolly & 3700lb hybrid car...9-1/2 mpg @60mph...
