Fuel Filter Changed, won't start

2007 Travel Supreme Alante' (45 ft), 500 HP Cummins ISM engine.
Just installed a new fuel filter and engine will not start. Followed procedures as
I understand them, installed new filter and did not prefill per cummins install information. Turned on key for min. 30 sec. 4+ times, fuel pump sounded like it was working. Attempted engine start, it ran for about 30 sec. & shut down (assume not getting fuel). I attempted to start 3-4 more time without success.
There is no fuel showing in the bottom water separator sight glass after attempts to start so fuel is not getting pumped into filter.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Keep cycling the ignition to run the fuel pump. You have air in the system.

If you did not fill the filter, it may take a while to fill and remove all the air.

Patience.

Be patient. I think i cycled the key on and off at least 8 to 10 times, possibly more. it may run rough a little but it will settle down.

I did the same thing on the same advice, Cummins isl 400 and cycled the ignition at least 10 times and it would not start. I got a new diesel can with a gallon of fuel and filled the filter through the outside holes so it would be filtered, spun it on and it started immediately on the first try.

Agreed. Be patient. I think the lift pump will run for 30 seconds and then shut off. If my information is correct, the lift pump works like a boost pump, but for only 30 seconds. It will take a few tries to get that large filter to fill with fuel and allow the engine to keep running.

And, yes the Cummins manual for my engine says no filling of the filter is required. I am assuming that the lift pump handles that chore.

Well, there are those that don't fill the filter and wish they had. Save yourself a lot of grief and wear and tear on the starter. Fill the filter.

Hi Dave! Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang!

As others have said, fill the filter! Keep her between the ditches!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!

Don't know if this works or not, but I've read here your fuel pump will run longer if you bump the starter, then let the key stop at the ignition position, rather than turn it to off position.

My ISL9 would not start with no prefilling filter. Techs say you must fill filter. I even loosened filter and let fuel drip the on the outside. No start. Finally had to pressurize the fuel tank with air pressure to get fuel into filter. Tank was about 1/4 -1/3 full. Next time will change with full tank and lose some while changing over. Primer on top side of assembly may have to be pushed many times also.
Finally after cranking 30-40 sec it started. Bought the clear bowl at bottom to change over faster.

My 08 400 ISL will not start without pre-filling. I don't care how many times you cycle the key.

Nice way to run the batteries down in a hurry if you don't prefill mine. You mileage will vary.

Hmm very interesting. Our isc primes with three or four key cycles and fills the filter just fine. Is there a problem with the lift pump? Did you get the old O-ring from the filter housing? The O-rings sometimes stay on the threaded top part of where the filter screws on. One doesn't always see it and it may let air in when the pump is cycling. I would check that, the o ring.

I am one to not fill the filters although sometimes you do have to. I would check the O-ring thing first, you should have fuel by now. Then yes fill the filter, or filters? How many filters do you have?
