fuel gauge

on my 99 mountain aire the gauge will not read under half tank and I have ran out how do I no if its the sender or gauge would be greatful for help .

My GUESS is if it goes to E when you turn key off, it could be the sender.

the gauge with key off only goes down to half and never reads less

I suspect the gage if thats the case. Disconnect the gauge completely and if it still reads half, the gauge obviously is defective.
