Fuel gauge

I have a 2002 Holiday Rambler and during my recent trip the fuel gauge went on the fritz. Taking to the shop this week for maintenance but does anybody know what may be involved in fixing or replacing the fuel gauge? Drop Tank? Electrical? Comments please. Road Rooster

Your rig may use the Centoid tank monitor, if so it is mounted on the top of the tank and is usually accessible. Mine is located on passenger side ~1.5' in from the side of the tank right behind the fill neck. It has several wires going to it. First thing I'd do is clean the connections.

Here's a link on how to adjust.

what are the gauge symptoms? Not showing any level change? inaccurate sometimes?
When you turn the key on...does the gauge go full and then rest at the correct value when working right?
Odds are the fuel sender is bad if no response or intermittent. Sometimes if the level is low you can replace the sender if it is mounted on the side of the tank. If on top, typically the tank has to be dropped. Either way, use up all the fuel you can.

Mine goes in the top and was able to be replaced without lowering the tank.

The fuel gauge is naught more than a rough indicator, anyway. Your odometer and a bit of 4th-grade arithmetic are your most reliable friends.

I agree with others that the sender is probably the culprit. On mine, which is on the side of my 150gal tank, the gauge would read full most of the time and after a while I would see it float down a little and I realized I could get a sense of how much fuel was in it. When it got below 3/4 it would display correctly for a while. Frustrating! I finally found a replacement but needed to have the level in the tank below or at 1/3 to remove the unit. with a 150 gal tank that means a lot of meaningless trips to nowhere and back.
Luckily, mine was easy to access. Unplug the wires to the sending unit, put a 100 ohm (I think that is the value, could be 90) resistor across the wires going to the gauge with the key "ON", have someone watch gauge and then short out the connector and have them watch the gauge. If the gauge swings full one way and then swings the other, the gauge is good and the sender is bad.
Even though my sender was easy to access it was not easy to get out. Make sure the tank is below or around 1/3 if sender is on the side!! It took a lot of finagling to get the bolts out without stripping the heads. Got it finally, removed and replaced the sending unit. System works great now.

Fuel guage

Thanks to all that commented on my original post. The sending unit was the culprit and has now been replaced. Unfortunately I am unable to do this kind of work myself but my local truck repair service did the job. The only downside to that is the cost for this labor intensive job. But that's the part of life with a motorhome. Thanks again.
