Thermostat only shows gas heat symbol on zone 1. Should it also show on zone 2, if calling for heat?

You have to select "Gas" mode for zone 2 before it will show on the panel. There should be 3 modes for heat:
Gas
Elec
Off

I seem to remember that it only showed on zone 1 on my Bounder 35E. It wouldn't be the first time I was wrong

Me either, especially since I'm referring to a 2006 Bounder.

Point of clarification, on ours if Zone 1 read Gas, so would Zone 2. But if Zone 1 read Elect, Zone 2 could be either Elect or Off.

I only had one furnace so it makes sense that it would be controlled by only one zone.

On my 2010 Bounder 35H, only the front Zone 1 thermostat has the gas heat option.

The thermostat on my 2016 Bounder only has gas heat on the Zone 1 setting. Since the gas heat from the furnace heats both zones at the same time it isn't really much of an issue. The only difference is which temp sensor it's using for it's reference. If either zone is on electric heat and the temp drops more than 5 degrees from the set temp it will revert to gas heat. If it does it more than 3 times it will lock out the electric heat for 2 hours. I've seen the Zone 2 electric heat trigger the furnace by playing with the thermostat.

When I installed a heat strip in the front AC of my 2014 35K I reprogrammed the thermostat. It showed gas heat available from Zone 2 after I did that, don't recall if it was on option before that. Your thermostat manual should show you how to program it.
The 2016 has heat pumps in both zones does the 2015 have that also?

After you installed the heat strip in the front a/c, how warm was the heat coming out of the vents?
I installed the strips in both of my a/c's. I can't really tell if there's much heat coming out at all. The installation instructions DO say that they're not intended to be electric furnaces, but rather, as they call it, "chill-chasers".

I only paid $130.00 for both strips, so it's not like it'll break the bank if they aren't really what I expected.

Zone one only heats on gas. Zone two only heats on electric (heat pump). This holds true on all newer models I believe unless you have a 16 with the upgraded package that includes a heat pump on the front ac as well as the rear. if you have a heatpump on the front ac as well then you would have a gas and electric option for zone 1 and electric for zone 2.

Thank you all for your comments. It is 1 below zero this morning, but I am going over to the storage building later to do some testing on the thermostat gas settings, to see if the furnace stays on, when I switch to heat on zone two. With gas heat on zone 1, it did not appear to have any heat coming to the back registers.

My 35E didn't get much heat to the rear bathroom. It was too far away :(. On the rare occasion that I needed heat , I used portable electric heaters.

A little off topic. First my Southwind has gas on zone 1 and elec on zone 2. On gas it sends most of the heat to the front, less to the bedroom and very little to the bathroom. I just swapped out the front registers to ones with dampers so I can distribute more heat to the rear. I'll let you know how it goes once I have a chance to test it out.
