Generator Gas Usage

Sorry if this topic has been covered, but I wasn't able to find it anywhere in my searches.

My question is: How much gas with your typical generator use in an hour?

We will be doing some camping without hookups and I just want to know how that will affect my overall gas mileage.

Thanks
Arnold

Our 8KW diesel gen uses about ½ a gallon running about ½ load, at full load it's less than ¾ gallon/hr. Very seldom run it at more than ½ load though unless I have both heat pumps and the battery charger going full.

I ran my 5500 gas for about 24 hours two weeks ago and used about 15 gallons.

a 5.5 to 7.0K, GASOLINE generator "should" use approx. 0.7 GPH when under load. I've never had one, but I understand propane fueled units can empty a tank pretty fast.

I suggest you fill up the gas tank immediately before you park, 'cause most coaches have the genset PU tube higher in the tank to prevent you from running out of motor fuel.

Our first DSDP had a 6.2Kw propane gen. At an FMCA rally in Redmond OR we used two 10 gallon tanks and most of our onboard 40 gal (32 usable) propane in 5 days. It was also noisy and blew the breakers on the gen set twice. Never again will we have a propane unit!

Onan estimates 0.5 gal/hr at 50% load for most all of its gas and diesel generators. Propane generators use about 20% more fuel, due to the lower energy content of propane vs gas or diesel.

Did you know that with todays gas prices if you run your gen. for 24 hrs you will use approx. $45.00 in fuel. Imagine if our homes were that expensive to cool !!
