Generator Issue

2016 4000K ONAN Generator. Runs and operates like a champ after it starts. Batteries are both 12.6 Volts. I can push the button to prime, light comes on to start. Push to start and the starter seems like it spins halfway and disengages, and will keep doing it when holding button to start. I stop, and start the prime, start sequence again with the same results...............until magically, the starter starts to spin like it should and the gen starts right up. This could take anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes and 50 half spins. Once it’s started and turned off, if I try to start it right back, it starts right up. Any ideas or suggestions?

I had a similar problem and thought it was a bad starter, but when I hooked jumper cables directly to the unit from a truck it started with precision.
I disconnected all terminals and thoroughly cleaned and re-tightened at battery and back of generator and starter. This did seem to help but then after jiggling on and off the original battery shut off at rear of Coach, I realized there is a sweet spot in the shut off switch and that the switch needed to be replaced.
It now works like a dream.

Send a message via ICQ to Ivylog
Check the voltage at the starter...doubt you have 11.0 when trying to start. Follow the above advice.

The should be a short ground cable between the generator frame and the chassis.

They often use tapping screws to mount them. Of course they loosen over time.

Here it is. How in the world someone would think this was a good ground is beyond me. It’s one of them things when you want to find the people behind it and shake some sense into them. Painted surface with a weather proof screw. Freakin really.Click image for larger version

If you can get to both sides and nut and bolt use a grounding star washer one side then another nut plain washer on top of wire loop. I only use stainless for grounds and bonding . threaded holes when possible. This Explosion proof areas .
