Generator will not start

We just purchased a used 2001 holiday rambler. At the lot the generator started up with no problems. Since home generator will not star while on battery or plugged in. Any suggestions

Won't start as in turn over, or turns over, but won't start? Could be a battery issue if it won't turn over. Have you tried calling where you bought it to ask?

It won't turn over I hear a clicking sometimes when push button. Have charger on batteries. How does battery shut off switch work

How the battery shut off works depends on the RV I fear but generally it turns off MOST of the house circuits INCLUDING (But not always) the Generator. Some generators have their own battery (most do not) some use HOUSE, some use Chassis.

Odds are its a dirty connection.. I would clean ALL battery connections starting with the house side, Then hook a volt meter to the red lead on the generator (may even be labeled 12V+ or +12V) and to the chassis (Generator's not the RV's. then try to start it using the outside switch while watching the meter.

If it starts: Fixed, if not, did voltage drop, if so clean CHASSIS battery terminals and try again, IF starts: Fixed, if not, did voltage drop, and POST the reponse.

If it won't turn over, it is most likely the house batteries. The chassis batteries start the main engine while the house batteries crank the generator. Check the house batteries - they should charge when on shore power, but they may be shot.

After the unit has been plugged in overnight the batteries should be charged. Check the voltage and/or specific gravity to check. If the batteries are fully charged the generator should at least turn over. After you try starting it check the voltage if it does not start. If it has dropped to discharged you may have worn out batteries as is to little capacity to start the generator or do much of anything else. There are several good sites about how to test the batteries just google flooded cell lead battery.

What happens when you try and start it? It is a diesel genset so the first thing you should do is hold the sw in stop after 15 to 20 sec the light in the sw should come on and you are priming the generator this applies to both gas and diesel units prime it for 30 sec to a min then push and hold the start sw on a diesel the light should flash rapidly which means it is running the fuel pump and the intake heater. Continue holding the sw in the start position as the engine will not crank til intake temp is correct this will vary depending on temp. What I see a lot is customer picks up unit at dealership on a warm day then tries to start it on a cold day and does not hold the sw long enough to start it. If it does not crank and start within a min release and try it again. if after second attempt the sw light is flashing then push stop one time it will now blink trouble codes which will be a series of blinks pause and second series of blinks then long pause and repeat. 4 blinks pause then 6 blinks long pause is a 4 6 code ect. the code will continue to blink until you hit the stop button again.

My cruise control would not work once. Found out my brake lights were not working either. It was a bad ground to the chassie on the rear of the unit. Don't know that it affected my generator. Don't think I tried to crank the generator during the episode.

Both problems could be ground related ,also ck your break light switch. on gen. ck starter relay for connection make sure they are clean and tight. ck also the starter is tight as well as connection.
