Our awning doesn't have wind sensors but if it did I wouldn't trust them.
Our awning is a power awning, and during the summer—when it's out the most—we use tie downs that are quick release, and we can bring the awning in very quickly if needed.
We watch the weather closely at all times and any sign that things may get a little ugly, the awning comes in. We never leave the main awning out when we're gone. Well I say never...if we know the weather is good and we have to make a quick run to the store or something, we'll leave it out. But if we're going to be gone on a short day trip or something like that...it comes in.
What really gets me and I know a lot you have seen this as well, is a lot of these folks in camp grounds that live there year round. You know the type. They have there awning out, tied down, with front and side shade cloth, also tied down, where there is basically a entire enclosed shaded box off the side of their trailer or coach. I often ask myself what the heck do these people do in the event of storm? I've watched many storms go thru areas like this, and these folks don't do anything or take any precautions and afterwards their stuff is fine. And you can tell that this shaded living area has been out a long time. Leaves on them, usually dirty with camping gear, other stuff stacked all around it, BBQ and furniture inside. I don't get it.
A side story...
When we were in Florida this past summer, there was a family that had a 30' or so new TT. They parked it across from us and everyday they left for the whole day but would come back every evening. They left their awning out ALL THE TIME. It never came in. It was the type of awning that had that scissor type of support up top with no side support rails. Well you know Florida right...rain, wind, more rain everyday. And their awning would just bounce up an down and flap around and I was just waiting for that thing to go sailing across the camp ground. One evening, I went over to that fella and told him what was going on while they were gone. He said, it'll be OK. It's brand new. I offered some brief kind advice but he con't to keep it out. We left a couple days later. I have no idea of his outcome.
