Going for service / remove stuff

If you were going to drop your rig off at a small town dealer for a 10 day service visit, how much stuff would you remove? Their lot is not secured and I don't think they can spell crime in their version of Mayberry.

Nice town. Super fantastic dealer.

Most service people are honest. Most other people are honest. Some are trash and some are opportunist. The last one will grab something that catches his eye. The next to last will take anything that is not nailed down. I always told my customers to take knives, guns, cameras, and other such "treasures" out before dropping off there coaches. The dealer will try to protect your coach, but remember the guy working on your coach will be in and out fifty times. A customer on the lot can dash in and make off with an attractive article in a flash. We were lucky. In fifteen years we had one thing stolen. A customer traded in his motorhome and forgot to get his shotgun. He was gone about three hours and called back. His trade in motorhome had been sitting on the lot unlocked for three hours. We went outside and checked behind the passenger seat and the shotgun was gone.

Why does service take 10 days? My 24,000 mile (major) service only took two and that was because they started late inn the morning. I know I would never let my rig out of my sight that long with out my dog inside.

We always remove just about everything. There is quite a bit of turnover as far as technicians and employees at most dealers. We like to error on the side of caution instead of regret

Dropped my 2008 Camelot off today in San Antonio

Twelve items on the list

It will take at least two weeks and this shop is faster than most

We remove most of what is not nailed down, but not stuff that's low value like our old oversized clothes

Got about three boxes of junk in garage from that exercise

As full-timers, for general servicing we'd call ahead to a place in the direction we were heading and make a specific appointment and for them to have the proper supplies ready. We didn't return to the same place time after time unless we were in Oregon (no sales tax). We'd arrive the night before and stay on their lot. They'd take the motorhome in early the next morning and it would be ready by afternoon. We usually spent one more night on the lot, most often with electric, and leave the next morning. Never any more time that that.

We'd remove any cash, computer and a few personal items. We'd spend the day siteseeing, doing errands, taking in a movie, having a leisurely breakfast/lunch and if nice, set our chair up in a local park and read a book.

It worked great for 16 years of full-timing.

Take off those things that are irreplaceable in your mind, either due to sentiment or cost, and don't sweat the rest.
Lock the basement doors to keep lot visitors out. Personally I'm less concerned about the service guys than I am about whoever can walk onto their lot after things are dark and closed.

Planned upgrades, warranty work. I gave them a window of time. Might be ready in less time. This is our selling Coachmen dealer. Very tight family run businees. No concern with the staff, but keys are only keeping honest folks out..

Ford service is done at a major Ford dealer that routinely works on motorhomes and busses. Fantastic dealer! (In Buffalo).

The only things we take out are cash, computers, checkbooks, and weapons. The weapons are mostly on the hip so no problem. We do have a frame mounted safe so junk like passports, etc are in the safe.

As much as I dislike Lazydays for keeping my coach for 5 months to work on my list of warranty items I can say nothing was missing. And this is in Tampa - certainly not Mayberry. I deduce the service people are good honest people. Management on the other hand...
I would NOT bring it back to Lazydays for sure.
Notice I said work on not FIX. I am headed to Indiana to have the manufacturer FIX my list of items. At the 5 month mark at Lazydays I said enough is enough and took it out of their lot.

Watch your electrical cord, twice mine went missing. We borrowed it and used it, was the techs response. It is now labeled with my Lic plate #, and we always check prior to departing the lot.

X2. In almost 20 years, the only item that grew legs was my 50A extension cord. Not sure if it was for the copper or just an honest mistake.

Usually put cameras in a backpack set up for hiking then grab anything else sitting out that is worth much in cash. Figure there is not much of a market for used dishes or clothing. Some stuff like computers are only in there when we are traveling. The rest of the time in the S&B because we are using them.
