Good Sam @ GMAC insurance story

On April 30 2012 I scratched two of the compartment doors and put a quarter size chip in the Gel coat fender cover for the rear tires while driving my riding lawn mower. The scratch was on two doors. I obtained a verbal estimate form my usual R.V Dealer which was $1225.00 and my wife called Good Sam which in turn sent us to a Person named Mario at GMAC. Wife explained the incident and Mario opened a claim. So far so good.
Several days go by and Mario calls back and states that since two doors are damaged there must have been two accidents and my $500.00 deductable will be $1000.00.
With this info we decided to have the work done and pay for it out of pocket which I did. Mind you these were two scratches 6 to 8 inches long in the paint on the lower part pf two compartment doors and a quarter size chip in the fender opening.
A local shop did the work for less than $400.00 and all was O.K.
Until I get the renewal notice last Friday, because of a non injury accident my policy renewal went up $970.00 and and then they subtracted 3 driver points on my personal Auto Declaration Page.

I was driving the lawn mower. I rest my case.
Guess who will not be renewing their policy with Good Sam and will very likely drop any and all other Good Sam programs I have.

Up until now I have had a clean driving record no tickets and no accidents
I have learned a lot and will survive this episode without being upset.

Once you drop all your Good Sam programs, you'll still get tons of junk mail from them. I was getting 3-4 mailed solicitations a week from them at one point. Here's how to stop that: Take all the materials they send, stuff it in their prepaid envelopes, leave your name on the form, write NO on the sign up forms and mail it back to them.

Takes about six to eight weeks, but their junk mail will stop. GS doesn't like to pay even a couple $$ for returned mail that doesn't generate income.

How casualty insurance companies set rates after a claim is, to me, one of the great mysteries of life. Several years ago, when tired, frustrated and stupid, I tried to park our motorhome under a roof with an extra support beam making the entrance much lower than I thought. I ended up wiping out the satellite dome, the over the air antenna, and an air conditioning cover. National Interstate promptly paid the $2000 claim and, much to my surprise, did not raise our rates. Every couple of years I check competitor's rates at renewal time but due to National's response to the claim, I have never seen a reason to change.

BTW, we dropped Good Sam stuff five years ago and still get a ton of junk mail from them.

It is interesting that you are angry at Good Sam, when it was GMAC that is your problem. It was the insurance company that made the decisions, not Good Sam. It sounds like the adjuster that you spoke with has little or no knowledge about RVs and the layout of compartment doors. I believe that I would call and dispute their decision to up your rates so much for NOT making a claim, and then to internally smudge your driving record when you were NOT driving your car or on a public roadway!

Be upset with Good Sam if you wish, but your real beef is with GMAC Insurance.

Agree with Tom - you need to escalate your case to GMAC and get "Mario" set straight. I'm no fan of Good Sam, but your beef is not with them.

Did you run into the motorhome and while moving away sling something at the rear wheel? I'm still trying to understand what you did or was there two separate occasions? Believe me, I'm on your side and also have GMAC. Hope they are not as bad as you say but, I have them thru FMCA.

You might also try logging on to RV.NET (www.rv.net ) At the top of the forum board there is a section devoted to Good Sam and it's benefits, including insurance. Mr. Lemonis (GS CEO) watches the site and frequently responds to questions and concerns. State you case there and see where it leads. Sounds like you have everything to gain and nothing to loose.

Since you paid for the repairs out of pocket and did not file or collect on a claim, I don't understand their reasoning for raising your rates and putting the blemish on your record.

GMAC paid for my wind damaged awning last year, lust over $4,000.00, to my surprise my rates actually dropped this year.

I work in insurance and your situation is perplexing to me. Check your state insurance department to make sure that GMAC can increase your rate because of a claim that was withdrawn with no payout. In most states, a non-paid claim is not surchargeable. Second, how did you find a shop that would do a $1225 job for less than $400? Either you got quite a bargain for the work or the first shop was really gouging because it was an insurance related claim. Wow!

Working on a claim with GMAC right now. Just got the word Friday that a check had been sent to the shop for the repairs. The shop normally charges $104/hr, GMAC found that four other shops in the area charge $90/hr so the check is for a lower amount than the estimate. Guess I'll find out tomorrow if they shop will take the lower amount or I have to shop around some more.

DEFINITELY dispute this. They CANNOT cause your driving record to be affected when you were not driving. A lawnmower incident might affect your homeowner's policy, but does NOT affect your driving record.

This puts the agent AND agency in the position of having filed a fraudulent report with a gov't office, which can cause them censure and fines, the agent possibly even loss of license, and is actually a felony in some cases.

There was no claim. All records and reports need to be corrected and/or deleted. This could follow you for YEARS, and if you change insurance carriers because of a rate raise BASED ON A CLAIM, then your new insurance will be up as well.

This has nothing to do with his driving record. Just his insurance company's gouging page.

You don't even want to call your insurance company with a hypothetical question about anything. They will use it against you.

No fault claims usually don't result in higher rates. Windshields, vandalism, hail damage, etc.

Some years ago, I got an estimate from a repair shop. I was with the adjuster when he called the shop and asked if they would do it for less for them. They did. Whenever a shop knows it is an insurance job, they up the estimate.

If you have a GOOD agent, you can discuss it with them without fear of problems with the insurance company. In my opinion, the agent's job is to represent the interests of the customer. When a customer calls my office, we give advice about many things including whether it is in the customer's best interests to turn a claim in or not, based on the insurance company's response to similar claims.

Is anybody curious as to what happened to the OP? I don't see even the slightest reply or update from the OP. Wonder what is happening with his "non-claim"? lyledavid, how about an update?
