i tried the slide out again the other night, and this time it pauses when extending, as well as retracting. does this sound like a hydraulic pump that might be going? to me, that would make sense since we have also been having problems with the leveling jacks as well, and they are all connected to the same pump/reservoir. is there an easy way to test the pump motor for this?

My 08 Sun Voyager has an electric rear slide and hydraulic forward slide. The fwd slide uses the same hyd pump as the leveling jacks. The pump solenoid is in the fwd left lower storage compartment with other electrical equipment. If the solenoid overhears the hyd pump will stop working for about 30 secs. You can then activate the pump again for about the same time before it stops again. Cleaning the solenoid contactors, especially the ground wire, solved my problem. Hope this helps.

Just a follow-up to my issue. I found a local RV repair center that was able to look at it and diagnose that the motor running the hydraulic pump was dirty/rusty. They took it out and tried to clean it but were unable to. They ordered a new motor and replaced it and now it works like a charm! They said that it was probably from lack of use, which sounds right, as we only use the motorhome a half-dozen times a year and only use the slideouts about that many times as well.

Sounds like you've got a auto reset breaker in the power supply to the slideout pump. On my 96 Sunvoyager the slideout pump is connected directly to the house batteries with a breaker for protection and mine does the same thing when its cold, thicker oil and grease increases the pump load. If you can find the protection for the slideout pump check to see if its a breaker, if so try replacing it might be getting tired.
