How do you change a headlight in a 2005 Phaeton?

just the bulb or the entire headlight unit.

Just the bulb on the drivers side

It looks like some kind of metal rod coming out the back side of the bulb, I can turn the bulb with the metal rod but it doesn't seem to do anything.
