Question Heat Pump & Furnace Issue

I have a 2002 Monaco Windsor PBD with a problem activating my furnace. When I turn on the heat pump, it seems to be working in the rear zone, but although there is noise coming from the front unit, it does not deliver heat. I am in Northern British Columbia and temperatures have been dropping below freezing - when the furnace should be kicking in - but there is nothing.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks

On mine, you have to chose either heat pump(s), or furnace. (My furnace is an Aqua Hot). You cant run both at the same time.

Hope this helps.

Hi from the Sunny South,
Your Heat Pumps will drop out once the ambient gets near 0 C. But, the furnace should come on assuming you have propane and the valve at the tank is on.
Not sure how your Monaco is controlled, but my heat pump will default to the furnace as soon as the temp drops to the point where they will not function.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Dennis - my unit does not have AquaHot.

In the past, when ambient temperature was low, the furnace did kick in. This fall, the heat pump keeps running and the furnace doesn't kick in. I am only getting heat from the rear heat pump when that happens.
The propane is turned on - using it for the fridge and water heater.

Thanks for response.

Probably a silly question... but are you sure that your front AC unit has the heat pump option? In my (Fleetwood) coach, only my middle AC unit has a heat pump, even though the thermostat allows me to select "elec heat" from my other two AC units. If I do that, those AC units will circulate air, but unheated. And it will prevent my furnace from kicking on. Just a thought...

I will see if I can check out if it has heat pump option - I presumed it did.

My heat pumps will act the same way depending on ambient temperature and also humidity. Try turning them off from the control and then turn on the furnace. You should hear the fan come on and then hear the burner light.

Dennis - when I turn Comfort Control on, it only shows "cool" and "heat pump".
I am not sure if it needs to be colder to show furnace. In the past, when it was down to 3'Celsius, and I turned on the Comfort Control panel, it showed "furnace".
Right now we have 28'Celsius with a low of 7'Celsius so it may be a few more days before I get a chance to try it when it is colder.
Thanks for your comments.

Sounds like you have the same Comfort Control Panel as my coach. You should be able to press the Mode button repeatedly and cycle through each function such as Cool, Heat Pump, Fan, Furnace etc.

It may not be showing furnace because you have another zone on heat pump.
Another posibility is your thermostat needs a re-boot.

On ours you can program for any type heating function you want. If you program the heat pump mode, but the outside temp is below 45 degrees +/-, the furnace will overide the heat pump and self activate as the heating source. Being from Southern California we use the heat pump more often. Our front heat pump is going to gas heater no matter what the temp. I was told that we have a bad "thermister" which tells the control panel what source to use. The part is on order for us. Maybe yours is stuck the opposite way, just an idea to look at.

I LOVE THIS FORUM!
Thanks 96 Wideglide - when I checked my Zone 2 it was on Heatpump and I was able to change it to furnace and get it operating. I thought I had worked through each of the steps previously but obviously I hadn't.

It now appears to be working properly.

Thanks everyone for your input.
