Heat pump switches from electric to LP?
Cold night in FL, front heat pump on electric runs for 5-10 minutes then switches on it's own to LP ? Rear HP works fine on electric? Anybody had this happen, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

It very well could be that your front unit either went into the defrost cycle, or it is set to switch auto to propane when the temp outside drops to a set point such as 40 degrees. Is your front stat the master or a slave? I don't know how they have it wired, but those are conditions that can cause it. Need a little bit of more info, what is the stat modle# and heat pump model #. Then I can tell you the sequence. Most heat pumps quit producing heat between 40° and 35°, then switch over to aux heat, in this case probably the furnace.

We have had this happen occasionally to our heat pumps, almost always when it was marginal as to weather they could actually produce any heat. They would flip over into propane and not untill temperature outside was a little warmer did they return to "normal".

On mine the auxiliary heat (LP furnace) will come on any time the set temperature is 5 or more degrees above the actual room temperature (as seen by the thermostat). The assumption is that doesn't happen unless the heat pump is not providing adequate heat, but it also handy for faster warm-ups

If the heat pump cannot meet the temperature rise demand called by the thermostat the propane furnace (or Oasis/Aquahot) will be added. Normal operation.

Except the OP has two heat pumps, and one is switching over to propane while the other continues working fine on electric. The answer will have to address why one is acting one way and the other is acting another way.

One heat pump is still producing enough heat to satisfy the thermostat. The other heat pump is not as efficient and has allowed the inside temperature to drop 4-5 degrees below the thermostat set point, thus the propane furnace fired up.
This happens on ours also, part of the issue is the big single pane windshield sucks the heat out of the front of the coach. Putting an insulated solar shield on the inside of the windshield will help reduce the heat loss.

Hi,
Usually Zone 1 is connected to propane furnace when not enough heat outside. Zone 2 is not defaulted to propane furnace. It may run as a fan but does compressor kick in?
Another point is with heat pump you should also move the thermostat only 2 degrees at a time and if you move more than propane furnace will kick in.
One last solution, when it is cold outside cuddle with your partner under an afghan.

Since you said Coleman A/C units, you probably have this thermostat 
Notice the word Diff indicating the set point is too many degrees beyond the actual room temperature. In which case the gas heat will come on.

Mine kept doing the same thing, and after having it checked out, it was to have a frozen reversing valve. Since the roof units are NOT servicable, the whole heat pump/ac had to be replaced. Big Bucks!

t-stat, can only be raised every 4 degrees from room temperature
