On my unit, you need to keep the switch engaged until the generator starts. It may take several (many) seconds for it to start.

Is it a diesel generator? If it is, it will most likely take some time to start. What you hear is the fuel pump running and the glow plugs need to heat before it will start. Depending on outside temperature, this can take as long as a minute.
If it's gas, then it should turn over briskly right away. If it doesn't it could be bad batterys, bad connection, bad starter, etc.

Find the make and model of your generator, Then download the owner's manual from the manufacturer's web site... This will give you the proper starting instructions.
You said it "Groans" I gather you mean it turns over slowly and with difficulty and does not start.. This can be caused by low battery (Usually the house) or by a bad connection (Usually but not always at the battery, #2 is the chassis end of the battery negative cable, Then you get in to the "Rest of the connections" including the chassis ground straps on the generator.
If it starts, then stops That can be caused by both low battery and by a bad generator, low oil, bad brushes, and other issues.

thank you all fot your advice will look up the websites
I purchased this on ebay and so far the dealer lied about the age advertised as 93 is a 92 which caused a lot of grief at the us/can border so when he says the gen runs fine I assume he is b.s.ing about that too
and yes I get a groan and nothing else when I try all the start switches so will either have to take it in and get raped by a local r.v.store or ??? find someone who can fix it elsewhere once I get this working I can move on to the a/c units that dont appear to be working
If you are in Ohio the dealer is the rvexchange in Columbus dont deal with this crook

When you do get it running remember that most systems won't operate if the fuel tank is at 1/4 full or less. Has saved a lot of people from walking home.

Actually your dealer did you a big favor. He surreptitiously taught you how to buy an RV.
The next time you buy an RV you will check all those things yourself before it leaves the lot.
Many of us have had the same experience on the first RV we bought.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply you were stupid.
I've done the same thing and that's how I learned about buying RV's. There is a learning curve for sure.
