I have a 1999 Coachmen Mirada (Ford Chassis V-10). I have an problem that is intermittent. At times, especially when coming to a stop I will suddenly lose power steering and brake power at the same time. The belts are all fine as well as fluid levels. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate hearing them! Thanks!

Not sure if your MH has a hydro-boost or not. It replaces the brake booster, & also controls your power steering.

The power steering pump provides pressure for both the Hydro-Max brake booster and the steering gear. If the belt is properly tensioned, does not slip and the fluids are OK, suspect a defective pump or have it ruled out.

Thanks for the replies! I just wanted to add something. I do have power steering and brakes except when coming to a stop then I suddenly lose power. I regain it again usually after stopping putting it in park and driving again. Thanks!

Many systems have a computer controlled throttle which is a simple motor that activates a pass through that bypasses the gas pedal.

What this does is under low power conditions such as stopping at a light, it increases the power for power steering and brakes, it also monitors the head pressure on the AC system and compensates for that as well.

If the engine speed seems low on first startup when cold then the motor is bad are stuck, same motor.

There also may be a control that effects the brakes and stering, but we must assume that is a priority.

So first test is on a cold morning do not touch the gas pedal and start the engine, should be "fast idle" and then the speed should decrease as the engine warms up, remember do NOT touch the gas pedal during this test.

If this passes then the motor may be fine, next would be to check the sensors that tell the computer what is going on.

If this fails then either the motor is stuck due to carbon or loose wire, easy to fix, a couple bolts then clean it with carb cleaner.

The idle works as it should on a cold startup. The fluid levels and belts are in good shape also. The power steering and brakes work fine and they don't always lose power when coming to a stop but when it does happen it is when coming to a stop. Thanks for the help!

The nxt time it happens, look at the tach. I think you wil find the rpms going very low, which drops pump pressure.

Another thing worth checking... The hydroboost on the F53 has an electric backup pump. If you just switch the key on (but do not start the engine) you should hear the electric pump running. It's attached to the brake master cylinder, right under the hood and near the power steering reservior, and mine at least is very loud and runs continuously.

A problem with that pump could cause low boost at low engine rpm, and hard braking and steering.
