Allow at least 10%($10k) for fix-ups after purchase... new tires, batteries, upgraded TVs, etc, etc.

In your sub-$100k price range you'll be looking at 10+ yr old DPs. Basement airs were only available until 2007-2008 or so. They had to be discontinued because that space was needed for pollution devices mandated by EPA. I had three previous models with basement air, now have roof airs. I would never go back to basement air. A/C parts are limited/not available for basement airs. At 10 years, you can expect to be replacing the a/c soon anyway.

Most 40' with full-body paint really need 3 rooftop airs, 2 is just not enough. Been there, done that.

Only Cummins engines available beginning EPA 2007. Cat(and Mercedes) dropped out of the motorhome market at that time because they chose not to meet the EPA mandate.

Buy only a m/h that lived in the south. Rust on a northern coach is terminal, life is too short to deal with rust, especially on vacation.

Happy shopping.

We live in Kansas City, our budget is $100k, we have 2 boys, 19 and 14, and 2 golden retrievers. We will be financing the majority of the "new to us" coach. We would like a 40 footer with a king size bed if possible.
Class A rigs a really "designed" for two people to travel in luxury. Sure, they usually come have a fold out bed in the couch, but they are not too comfortable (maybe fine for a one, maybe two night sleepover). Not something you would have two teenagers to share - and expect them to be happy about it.

For your situation, a Class C may be a better choice. They generally have sleeping arrangements (advertised for six or more) which means four would be pretty comfortable.

If you really want a Class A, look at the models with the "bunk beds". IMHO

Thank you all so much! Fantastic help - much appreciated!!

Our Goldens are kennel trained. Wish the boys were! ;-) Luckily the boys both still love to camp with us (as long as we bring their bikes). Prob so they can get away from us.

Old coach had bunks that no longer fit the boys and we were thinking that we would step up now. And longer driving trips I would feel better in a DP, I think. Since we live in KC we are ready to explore the coasts and looking forward to longer trips.

Thank you again for all the advice! So much appreciated.

Private, Roof, Cummins, lot's of pictures and ask lots of questions. Recently bought a 08 Navigator 2000 miles away based on pictures and several questions, but I knew the "must have items" that I wanted like a 06 engine.

I see your point re the class C but shudder when I think about a rainy day of really hot day with the WHOLE family is trying to share the same small space. Also smaller black water tank would make it necessary to dump every twenty minutes or so.
