Help with SMI Air Force One installation

I purchased a second hand airforce 1 from the classifieds here but it has arrived without the tank that goes under the coach.
The installer wants me to spend another $400 on the little tank and about 12 hrs installation
I already have an air fitting at the rear of the coach.
Under what circumstances can I go without the tank.
I'm concerned that I didn't get all the bits and it's now going to cost $2000 installed.

Steve, with all due respect, you could have purchased a brand new unit with 2-year warranty for about $1700 installed.

Don't go without the tank. You are violating the safety systems built into the AFO system for coaches with air brakes.

P.S. Total installation time is about 4-5 hours.

Yes I agree
I bought it sight unseen (as I'm in Australia and assumed it was all there)
I'm trying to track down the seller to see if he has the other part
Failing that I guess I'm up fir that part
I should be able to pick it up second hand I guess.

I don't know
It was delivered to my storage place in LA and now in the hands of the service guys
I wish I'd just bought a new one

That tank also controls the supply air and metered air, so it is critical to the operation of the unit. I would not consider trying to connect the air output to the toad without it.

Give SMI a call. They can probably sell you whatever parts you need. I found them to be very helpful when I recently traded coaches and was switching my AF1 to a new rig.

I'm thinking that's where the installer got the $400 price tag
Real bummer
I'll have a look around for a second hand one.
I've written to the guy I bought it off to see if its still on the coach or he can help squire one so I guess I'll see how that goes.

I don't have one so I am hoping people with one will answer but is that tank also used for breakaway. With my portable unit when the breakaway lanyard is pulled it locks up the brakes. I have an onboard compressor and storage tank in my unit (Rvi 2) Without the tank you are talking about what happens if the toad breaks away

It's not used for breakaway but for delivering metered air to the toad apparently
I'll have alook around for a used one maybe from a coach wrecker - see how that goes

Steve,
You said you already have an air fitting on the back of the coach. What was it used for?? On the older Air Force One units they tied directly into a break line with a T connection. The newer units have their own "ping tank" so if there was a break in the air line, it will not bleed the air out of the break system. So, I'm trying to determine if you had or now have an old unit or a newer unit?
In any event the unit will work fine either way. Does your air fitting have an electrical connection next to it? If yes, then it is the old unit. If not, then maybe your coach already has the ping tank installed?? (Someone would need to follow the air line from the fitting up the chassis to wherever it is connected.)
You are past the five year warranty anyway so even if you are tapped directly into the airline it does not matter, since it is not a warranty item.
So, let's assume you have air coming out of the fitting, then all you need is the box installed on the toad. The black box on the toad contains a tiny ping tank. If the break-away switch is activated, this small air tank provided the air that pushes the piston, that pulls the toad brake pedal, that stops the car.
Do you have any installation manuals?? I may have some pdf files that I can send you. Send me a Private Message (PM) with your email and I'll send what I have.
I don't know why you need to install a new airline if you already have one?
I have installed three units and my friend has installed several, so I am sure we can help you.

When we traded our Journey for our present rig the dealer (Tom Johnson in NC) insisted on installing their own stuff on the coach for my AF1. I had the older AF1 system on my Journey and tried to get TJ's to duplicate that on the Allure, but they refused, saying they were required (by their legal folks) to install something on the coach that was safer than what I had on the Journey. They estimated parts and labor at about $1,000. I agreed since I wanted to get done and on the road.

After some thinking, I called SMI and they said they had what I needed for about $200 (IIRC) and it should take me about 2 hours to install. I tried to stop the install at TJ's but they had a mechanic work late one evening to install their stuff. It is a fairly nice sized ping tank and fittings.

I now need an installer to fit this smi airforce 1
I'll be arriving in Los Angeles on 31st March at 7am from Australia and booked into Long Beach RV for 2 days before heading off to Mammoth.
So if I can drop the car between Norwalk and Long Beach I can load the coach at a Walmart etc while the brake gets fitted.
I've been quoted 12 hrs which is insane
Any ideas who I can book?
