Hot Exhaust

While driving home last night, I had been on the freeway at about 65 MPH for several hours when the "hot exhaust" warnign light came on. It stayed on for about 25 minutes till I got off of the freeway, then while driving the last few miles to my house the light went off and did not come on again.

The motor home is a 2009 Country Coach Inspire 43ft. with the ISL 425 engine in it.

The engine seemed to run fine with no loss of power while the light was on.

I am conserned as to why that light came on and if I should do anything about it ???

Any informed info will help

Thanks in advance

Gene

Do you have the new engine with the particulate filter in the exhaust? If so, the hot light is normal as that is when the temp gets raised on purpose to clean out the filter.

This will explain it http://truckcityofgary.com/new/cummins/brochure.pdf

After arriving here where I"m parked, which is on top of a steep hill, While putting the blocks in front of the tires I brushed up against the exhaust pipe on this 8.1L Vortec gasser.

It was nice and warm.. But no burn. (Surprised the heck out of me) I did have a shirt on but ... I expected it to be much hotter.

Don's got it Gene. My 08 ISC does it too. Kinda freaky, seems it only happens like every 2500 miles or so?
When I read about it in the cummins manual, I expected it to happen more often but for a shorter periodc of time.

Does this particulate filter stuff up the exhaust, cause power loss as compared to not having it?

Thanks for the replys

I do have a particulate filter on this motor home and I beleive that's all that was going on ???
I've driven this thing for about 6,000 miles and this is the first time that it has re-generated ?? would that be normal ??

The motor home has 31,000miles on it now, I bought it with 25,000 on it ---

Again thanks for the help

The regeneration could be based on fuel consumed, hours the engine has run, or mileage. There could be sensors mounted it the particulate filter that reads some "value" and decides when it is needed. Best bet is to call Cummins for the correct answer.

Excessive exhaust heat eats turbo's up fast. I'd have Cummins check it to be safe.

NO. Honestly, read the cummins manual for your late model RV.

The "HOT EXHAUST" warning light is only there to tell the owner that the particulate filter is in a regeneration cycle, nothing more. It does not indicate a problem, it is only providing info.

Mine has gone on twice so far, in about 4500 miles of driving.
It stays on for a half hour or so at highway speeds.

It is fully detailed in the cummins manual that came with my 08 coach.
