house batteries

While servicing my house batteries today on my Newmar Ventana i discovered quite a spark between the positive post and positive cable. I had the battery disconnect in the store position and no shore power with the engine and generator not running and thought there should have not been power flowing from battery to the positive cable. All four batteries were very low on water.
Local RV shop forman said inverter still on. Any suggestions appreciated.

Turn off your inverter when in storage. Mine also has a manual disconnect between the house batteries and the inverter.

Inverter and other items (CO2/smoke detector) are directly tied to the batteries - the cutoff switches don't disconnect them. The inverter has a power draw even when turned off. So to have a spark occur when disconnecting / connecting cables is not unexpected.

Unless your co2 or smoke detector is 110 volt, it don't go thru the inverter. I am almost sure mine are 12 volt.

Sorry. Re-read your post. I misread what you said. Forget my prior response to you.

Inverters spark when connecting the cables, due to the large capacitors in them. The initially spark is them charging up.

It typically won't spark again, unless left disconnected for a 1/2 hour or so.

Sounds like my local RV foreman was right then. Not a short somewhere. That's a good thing. Thanks for all input.

Disconnect the battery ground side (chassis ground) if you want to be sure every power device is shut down.
