House batteries - which ones in advance of a solar installation

Was hoping to have a solar install done next year, would have changed batteries at the same time. House batteries are done so will have to replace them now. Since I don’t have a full understanding of battery/solar, I am trying to get highest amp hours that will fit in my battery bay. I have a max height of 12.5 inches and total width of 28 inches for 4 batteries. I can’t afford lithium so looking for either AGM or FLA.

Wondering what others who have solar are using for house batteries. I want solar to be able to boondock.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

I'd recommend AGM's if you can't afford Li. If you look at your battery compartment and have the room consider going with 6V 300 amp hr AGM. You have to wire them in series/ parallel but it could give you up to another 100 amps of storage. Before you buy go get some quotes on Lithium batteries they keep getting cheaper every time I look. Remember you'll be buying new batteries in 3-5 yrs with li you might not have to do that for about 10 yrs or more.

If boondocking with solar, I recommend flooded deep cycle batteries. AGM care manuals typically state that they require a 100% recharge frequently.

Flooded batteries will tolerate partial recharges better, although all lead acid batteries should be stored at 100% state of charge.

Besides, during the learning stage of living on batteries, killing flooded batteries is much cheaper. I've gotten 6 years of heavy use with cheap Sams Club batteries.

Although # of cycles and care determine the life of all batteries, I would be disappointed if I only got 3 to 5 years out of AGM batteries.
