I don't like doing panic stops when the light turns yellow with a 43', 21 ton RV, towing a 3500 pound car. If the speed limit is say, 50 and I am doing 45 on a road I am not familiar with, that 5 mph cushion keeps things orderly and safe.-Paul

What is there are no stop lights for a few hours? I would be 30 miles ahead of you because I usually drive 5 over the limit.

My opinion is - what speed you drive is a personal matter, but if you can't stop your rig in 300 ft or less, then you are driving too fast for the conditions.

Talked to Cummins representative. With our serial number in hand she said the sweet spot for our engine is 1650. That runs 62 on the speedo.

The Representative actually said " Sweet Spot " ?

Is that really a thing in diesel engine specs ?

I just googled it and the " Sweet Spot ", something used by truckers, is less then 1650 RPMs. More like 1350.

I agree, is there really a sweet spot? If I ran at 1,650 RPM's I would be passing everything in sight. 1,400 RPM for me is pushing 65 MPH so I can't imagine that much difference in a motor home diesel. Maybe still not in 6th gear.

I forgot to add to my earlier post that I find another advantage to 65ish is that it tends to reduce the number of lane changes. Not that lane changes are evil, but playing hopscotch in a 36’, 20,000+ lb vehicle seems contrary to the idea of vacation relaxation. I find I tend to drive more strategically and take the long view when I’m captaining the rig.

Usually 62 - 65 in a 70 zone on the interstate, with 65 being my top speed. That's a comfortable speed, and doesn't seem to hold traffic up. I adjust the speed down according to conditions and speed limits. I like staying 5 under the speed limit where the speed limit is less than 70.

I was just asking why it is important to exceed the speed limit just to be 30 miles ahead of someone else after a few hours while traveling in a motorhome.

I can't help but believe that some of your noses are getting longer. Where are all the RVers in their 40+ Class A that fly by me while I'm going 5 mph under the speed limit? I see lots of them doing 5 over...not under.
