Use generator for air conditioner while driving?

Wow! We are new to the "A" camper and drove our unit cross country during the winter. But, the engine air up front is useless. Now that summer is here it is good to hear that you can run the generator for using the air conditioner while traveling. I had not even thought of that. We have 101 hours on our generator.

12.5 Onan diesel. The coach rarely rolls down the road without it running and we also have run it for days nonstop back when we were racing seriously. It will be rolling over 6,000 hrs (six thousand) soon... probably our next trip out.

The 12.5's have been used on many emergency vehicles and several techs that I've spoken with over the years report they see them with over 10,000 hours regularly. As others have said, routine maintenance and providing proper pm is the key to longevity!

Onan 10k in a 2013 Tiffin Phaeton 40QBH......just a tad over 122 hours. Most of those from exercising it 2 hours per month or using the AC's while driving down the road.

Our Georgetown was 8 years old when we bought it and the Onan 5500 had 48 hours on the clock. When we sold it, 4 years later, it had 90 hours.

Both we and the original owners were full-service CG types, so it's likely that almost all those hours were monthly exercising. I think we used it for about 12 hours at a CG near Grand Coulee in July one year. We learned not to go into the desert in summer!

Record low?

Could this be the record for fewest hours over 8 years?

We purchased a 2007 Itasca Meridian recently with only 24,000 mi on the odometer and 64 hrs on the gen set. I hope a good portion of that was exercising the unit periodically.

Packing an Onan 4000 in our unit with about 208 hrs. I did a complete service on it before leaving Phoenix for Oregon in early June. Have run it a couple times while here. I'm gonna work the heck out of it while driving back to Arizona in a few days....
