Again this is a gas gen not diesel.
996 is a lot if it was not properly serviced. If the owner kept good records and you have access to them you can tell what kind of shape it may be in. I know this does not apply but i have a diesel Kohler with 14,000 hours on it and it still runs great.

A generator under load will help to reduce oxidation of the electric contacts surfaces with the brushes. Thus maintaining normal output.

Power company boom trucks have used onan marquise for years in our area. Mostly on lp but not uncommon tobsee these with well over 10,000 hours on them. Besides a new unit can be had for around 4200.00 If everything else on the rv is what you want gonfor it. The gen would be the least of my worries.

2008 Onan 10K with Kubota diesel engine 2246 hours. No rebuilds, always followed maintenance schedules. In storage ran once a month for couple hours under load

Generator Hours

I did't go through all the responses you received on what is safe for the generator hours but I did see some bad advice on the first page I read.

These generators require a fair amount of maintenance and you will need to read up on this, my advice is to go to Onan's website and find out what the maintenance schedule is and what you need to do.

Valve lash adjustments is one of the big maintenance requirements and that needs to be done a lot more than you would think and you already have the hours on yours to warrant this adjustment. It can be done on your own if you are mechanically inclined but if you've never done anything like this before then I would recommend you having it done by someone who knows what they are doing.

This is not a hard a fast rule because it can vary quite a bit but around 2500 hours and you could be looking at a rebuild needed for your generator

Onan Diesel Gen Set Hours

Have Gen Set in for service, 4200 hours. Cummin's says these Gen Sets well maintained can go 20,000 hours.
