I learned about putting on chains at an early age. My dad drove a wrecker (600 Holmes mounted on a C600 Ford) and I learned how and shortcuts quickly. We used 2X4s up to 6X6 blocks and tied the chains to wheels to carry them up and over.
Later in high school, we didn't do this "it might snow tomorrow, so schools out!" stuff and carried chains on buses. The down side was the male drivers were expected to chain up the women driver's buses. I seemed to forget those shortcuts then. Luckily, I only had to sling up chains once on a tractor trailer and that was for about 10 miles.
