How much DEF do you use?

OK, total rookie question, but not having ever owned a Diesel coach, and considering purchasing one in the the coming months, how much DEF does a typical DP consume? And I'm sure this is a function of the size of the DEF tank, but how often to you need to top it off?

Thanks.

Def usage

Between 1-2% of fuel usage seems to be numbers I have read.

Average about 1.5 gallons per 100 gallons of fuel used for me over 20k miles on this coach. (450 hp diesel pusher)

Yes 800 miles or bit less per gallon. Really no issue you will have a sensor letting you know if the DEF tank is getting low. If it runs out you will be cruising along at 5 miles per hour as the power shuts down. I always carry a spare 2 1/2 gallons just in case I end up in the boonies where no one knows what DEF is. Yes it's happened.

My Freightliner holds 11 gallons. The usage depends a lot on how you drive and the size of the coach (weight) and the mpg it gets. You could probably safely go 7000 -9000 miles on a tank of DEF. You won't run out unless you just don't pay attention.

I keep a box or two of DEF at home and top off after each trip.

I have a freightliner w/340HP Cummins. The DEF usage is about the same as stated earlier, 1 gal. per 800 - 900 mi. The gauge lets me know the 5 gal. tank level and I don't let it get below 1/2 before I fill it. I too keep a 2 1/2 gal. backup container in my basement.
My frustration is that the DEF fill is on the passenger side and the truck stops I've found all fill DEF from the driver side only. I'd pull in backward but don't want to PO any of our trucking friends.

DEF consumption varies largely on the terrain you are driving in, altitude, how much weight you've added to the coach, and if you are towing. The more the engine has to strain climbing hills or towing a TOAD or trailer, the more DEF you will be using. The gentler you are on the gas pedal and the gentler the road conditions, the less you'll use.

I know this first hand from driving my 2013 RAM Cummings diesel equipped with a DEF system. I have my first Class A Ventana on order so I can't speak from experience on a Class A, but relatively speaking DEF consumption on my truck and an RV should be the same.

Keep in mind that depending on ambient temperature, the shelf life for DEF is between 1 and 2 years. The stuff does not work when it goes dead and repairs are not cheap.

Information on the Cummins web site estimates 2% DEF to fuel (two gallons of DEF for every 100 gallons of fuel). Our average is below this. I can usually add a 2.5 gallon container of DEF about every 1200 miles. Using an average of 7 miles per gallon of fuel, that's roughly 1.5% DEF to fuel.

Bottom line, it's no big deal. We could go almost 5,000 miles before we'd have to add any DEF. I carry a 2.5 gallon container with me and when the DEF tank goes down by 1/4 I'll dump it into the DEF tank. The next time we're in a Walmart I'll buy another 2.5 gallons of DEF. You can buy DEF at most truck stops, for a couple of dollars a gallon less than what you'll pay buying it at 2.5 gallons at a time, but the location of the DEF hose relative to the location of the DEF tank in most motorhomes makes that a PITA. For as little as we use, I've chosen to stick with the 2.5 gallon refill at a time "plan".

I completely agree with Jay in the 2 1/2 years we never have used the truck lanes for DEF. Just not worth it. I buy the containers in 2 1/2 gallons when I think of it. If I already have a spare,(senior moments) just toss it in the toad. Now I got five gallons, more than enough for a cross country trip.
