How tall is your Motor Home?

I have a full basement model 1988 Fleetwood Southwind. It is a bit over 12 feet at the top of the air conditioners... All other roof equipment is lower than the two air conditioners. (Vent covers are close)


I ask this, because I have always had a fantasy of buying a double decker bus, and building my own camper/Motor home from it.

I know that most federal highways mark overpasses that are below 13'6" or I believe. I see that their site says that you should have one foot of clearance between top of vehicle and overpass, and that all overpasses are at least 14 feet in urban areas, and 16 or 17 feet in rural areas.

I also saw that there was a double decker bus exclusion allowing them to be 14'6" but that clearly would only work in rural areas.

So, I am asking what height your rigs are, and do you have clearance problems?

(I am not talking branches at campgrounds. That is a whole other issue)

I have seen many coaches and 5vers that appeared to me to be much taller than I when on the highway...

Our coach is 13' 1-1/2". The height was verified when we had the coach weighed at Escapees in Livingston, Texas.

I see many more low-clearance overpasses out here in the boonies than I see in urban areas.

My brochure says 11’ 6”. I assume I need 13’. Not sure how to measure it.

Ours is supposed to be just under 13ft but I use 13’6” for route planning.
Never know if paving has “lowered” the overpass or if ramp in/out could be a problem.

With the air conditioner on top... 11 feet... but I have an old gal ... with no cab over bed.The way to measure takes 2 people one on top with a long stick they put on top of the highest item, and one on the bottom with a long stick. The person on top marks the person on the bottoms stick where the 2 sticks cross... best to give yourself several inches more for repaving purposes... you can always carry the bottom person's stick with ya so you have it in case you need to check clearances manually....0y, and if you have airbags... measure with them inflated!

Ours measures 12'4". But I certainly want to have at least 6" more for clearance.

The driveway I drive out of my property on (I have a circular driveway) has some low hanging wires (Cable tv) that just cleared the motor home, and over the years, I noticed those wires sagged to the point that under certain conditions, they would just brush the top of my air conditioners. (Sometime I would go over a low curb (2 or 3 inches) and that would brush the wires.)

I used a tall step ladder, and moved the wires up by supporting them on the next wire up with some cord. (this was after calling the town and the cable company, but they did nothing) While I was up there, I used a tape measure, and went down to the ground to get my readings...

My 2002 Safari Trek is 11'5", part of the reason I bought it instead of one that was a year or two newer is that the next year they got taller at 12'1" and my shed has a 12'0" doorway.

That is all nice and good until you come upon that 1930's railroad underpass at 13'6" on a major 4 lane US Federal highway

Mine is supposed to be 13'0" but I've never measured it. A couple if antenna's are higher by a foot or so but they bend.

12' 3" and no.

Twice I had to turn around due to height restrictions - once near home here in western PA under RR tracks... and once in Custer State Park, SD.
