I'm driving a big rig - 2003 43ft Monaco Exec with or course a diesel engine.

Tried to fill up in Ind on their toll way - and found out that I 'should not'/ Could not fill up in the truck side do to not being a commercial vehicle.

I had to pull around and go thru their car lanes - I was lucky, in that they were big enough to allow that.

Is their some sort of online guide that will tell me which states by highway that has this kind of restriction?

I believe it has to do with how they tax diesel fuel in Indiana. If you look, they advertize and sell their fuel differently than just about any other state. Perhaps someone else can elaborate more, but I won't fuel my RV in Indiana just because of their taxing of fuel on big RV's

No other problems in any state except Arizona and that finally was resolved just a week or so ago. If you fuel in the truck lanes there, you have to pay an additional tax on diesel, however, the state has finally said this does not apply to RV's. Despite warnings on the pumps, you can fuel in car or RV lanes at Flying J and elsewhere and do not have to pay the additional tax even if you are over 2 axles and/or 26,000 pounds.

We are just about to head south & we always fill up in the truck lanes as with the smaller nozzle it takes forever to fill up. For us the more important question is the amount ethanol in the diesel. More than 10% & Cummins says we could be in trouble. This year we will not be filling up at any Pilot/Flying j in Pennsylvania or Texas as they use B20 or 20% ethanol in their diesel. Valero is the only company to limit their ethanol to 5% as far as we have been able to determine. Boy it's getting complicated out there.

I don't think ethanol is ever added to diesel fuel. Bio diesel yes. TA and FJ stations are up to B20 in Dallas. I got fuel at Loves today and it is marked "up to 15%" bio.

Your right!! No ethanol in fuel!! The B20 is BIO

Biofuel will actually run cleaner in your engine that regular diesel.
I wouldn't worry about B20, in fact, I prefer it.

Indiana collects fuel use tax from commercial carriers by separate filing. So the truck pumps don't reflect the 7% tax. I refueled at a Loves truck pumps. and had to pay the tax separately... Some stations have been fined for allowing non-commercial vehicles to use the truck pumps. Article here:

I don't know of another state that uses this procedure. The big problem I had was the sign out front with the prices was 25 -30 cents lower than what was charged on the diesel pump in the RV lanes....

Indiana is the only state I've been through that doesn't collect tax at the truck pumps. I simply don't buy fuel in Indiana.

Oregon is another state which has a PUC Fuel Tax for trucks - just like Indiana and Oregon, like New Jersey is persnickety about you pumping your own fuel at the car islands.

In Oregon you will pay about 30 cents a gallon extra to cover the truck fuel tax. Need to use the RV or auto lanes to avoid it.

Of course I wouldnt do this

, BUT you can just grab the DOT # off the truck next to you and punch that in when fueling diesel in Indiana.

What I don't understand is that if going south once into KY fuel is cheaper and the tax is collected at the pump, so is IN's fuel that much better or are they taking advantage of the situation?
