How to help against semi trucks pushing a 37U Southwind to the right

Is there anything I can do or add to my southwind motor home to help the effect of semis passing me

Anti sway bars, or stiffer ones might help. How are your shocks?

If you have a solid axel you may be able to add a Safe T Plus to your coach
Go to their web site and enter your info and look it up, added one to my 40' Tiffin tremendous difference.

You didn't supply much info on your coach like the year and if it is on the Ford or Workhorse chassis.

On our 2006 Workhorse I have installed a Blue Ox Safe-T-Plus steering stabilizer that helps. Safe-T-Plus - The Steering Control Specialists | Helping motorists' vehicles steer safer, less, and with peace of mind.

I also travel with the fresh water tank full since the weight is in the bottom of the coach.

I think this is a stupid question but that's never stopped me before: Is there a period/age where one should look at replacing shocks? My standby testing method used with cars (bouncing on bumper) is rather impractical on a RV. I'm looking at something like the standard method on tires aging out but for shocks.

IMO one of the easiest and cheapest ways to fix the problem MAYBE?? is to inflate the tires to the tire manufacturers recommended tire pressure for each position on the coach. If you cannot do a corner weight get the axle weight and assume one end is 5% higher than the other. Then inflate all the tires on the axle to the recommended weight for the higher weight.

It probably will not fix the problem but may help.

We had great improvement by using venturi tabs every 4 inches at the back, top and sides. I forget the name, but they are triangular in shape and disturb the suction. This worked well on my 32' Class C. We don't need them on our Entegra.

On our last MH, I installed a rear track bar (BlueOx Tiger Trac) that stabilizes the coach's frame latterly with the rear axle. We were also experiencing porpoising at bridge expansion joints and uneven concrete slabs. Installed Koni FSD shocks. These two upgrades gave us the best bang for the bucks...so much so that that it made further mods non-issues. This was on an '05 W-22 chassis.

Space. Every inch you can put between you and the passing truck will make a big difference in how much the bow wave from that truck will have on your rig. Hug the fog line, the white line next to the shoulder as the truck passes.

Speed. If you are on flat land, slow down a little. This increases the speed at which the truck is passing you and limits the amount of time the air is effecting the rear side of the coach.

I agree with Murf2u.

I had a travel trailer that pushed my PU around every time a truck passed me. A passing bus was the worst.

One more thing that you may want to try is to put more throttle into it as the truck/bus passes you. This will get that forward force vector larger than the side force vector (think of those controversial tire blow out videos). You will not be able to accelerate so much that the passing vehicle will notice.

X's 2 on Air Tabs. The least expensive handling aid I made to our 98 Bonder, on a 99 F53 chassis.

Safety-T-Plus is recommended as a safety item in case of tire blowout. And it does help on less pushing around by trucks bow wave when coming up behind you, and the suck in as they do finally pass you.

And if your year model chassis did not have a rear sway bar, it would help handling. As well as if you do have a longer tail hang, a Pan Hard Bar would help too.

Henderson Line-up is good place to call and talk over options for your specific chassis and coach. If in the area, they do a before drive with you. Then go over recommended options. Will install them for you. Then go for a an after install drive with you to compare the results on handling.

My other recommendation, either via phone call consult or in person driving analysis - is to have them recommend the priority of component install. And go slow and do those in order, and then you can stop once you feel you like your current handling.

I'd not hesitate to the Safety-T-Plus and Air Tabs regardless of any other handling fixes you make. Another advantage of the Air Tabs on our coach, was that the camera stayed dryer in rain, and the toad was cleaner at the end of a days drive.

Best of luck to you,
Smitty

Tire pressure correct, alignment, front stabilizer, rear track bar in that order. This assumes the bushings and shocks are ok. Oh if it's a Ford the cheap handling fix, look in the Ford forum.

I had purchased a 2001 Georgie Boy (Suite) last year and was taking it on the first lng trip out of Tucson. When I got to Albuquerque I got tired of being pushed around with passing trucks and side winds. So went to a AAA recommended front end specialist who diagnosed that I needed new shocks including shock damper. That didn't seem right at first since the unit had only 17,000 miles on it. He explained that in his 25 years experience, shocks on a RV only last about 20,000 miles. I put on all new shocks and damper and the ride did improve somewhat. Since then I have also installed Steer-Safe system, and that helped even more.
