How to use tag axle tire for spare

What is the procedure for using a tag axle tire/wheel to replace another damaged tire? Do you put the "blown" spare back on the tag axle and lock the axle in the upward position somehow, or what?

I suppose you could chain the tag up on both sides and proceed at reduced speeds but it's a bit harder than in a truck. Once going forward most tags will have their spring bags re-inflate so you may be fighting against your own suspension system. Furthermore, you need to use caution on where you put the chains so you don't destroy wires, air lines and other components in the frame channels where you are chaining things up. Another issue is that you're probably going to overload the drive axle and tires.

Me----I call Coach Net. I do carry an unmounted spare for when I'm in Alaska or other remote areas where a matching tire is not readily available.

To me, there is no procedure, you put a new tire on. There is no way to keep the tag up without damaging something.

ERS such as Good Sam or Coach-Net. Best way to handle tire problems. IMHO.

Please don't even consider it!. Disabling the tag axle will increase the amount of load on the drive axle well past the capacity of the axle, wheels, and, especially, the tires, endangering your rig. your and your family's lives, and the lives of everyone else on the road. You will be much better off carrying a spare, unmounted or mounted, and use an emergency road repair service, such as CoachNet.

You don't. Tag axle tires are not spares. It's a load bearing axle.

If you want a spare, carry a spare. And get an ERS contract.

tag axle

Does your tag axle lift completly off the ground when backing up or is the load reduced

Reduced load. Air bag simply deflates, but nothing is raised.
