I live in Santa Fe and drive parts of this route frequently, all of it occasionally. The first part is divided section of US 285, then its all two lane with good passing lanes on the grades. Pretty good shoulders on most of it. There's a short climb just north of the little town of Abique, NM. From there its a very pretty drive. After Chama there's some winding roads, but should not be an issue for you. Abique, NM was home for Georgia O'Keeffe and the Abique area is where she did much of her painting.
Drive safe and enjoy the great views on this route.

I forgot to add to the above post that you will be driving close by Dulce, NM. For a fun read Google "Dulce UFO Base" and watch the skies! You never know what be in those mesas.

It's a good road--it winds a little and has some elevation changes, but it's wide, has good shoulders and was in good repair the last time I drove it. It's a great motorcycle road.

Fun road, but a lot of nothing. Most towns are empty, or almost empty. Also didn't have Verizon coverage, which was a first! 😜

We were there 3 weeks ago. The road is good with several passing lanes. The red mountains coming out of Santa Fe are beautiful. If you're traveling late in the day be sure to watch for wildlife. This is a good road with no serious problems. We live in Pagosa Springs and go to SF every 2-3 months or so so the DW can shop at Trader Joes.
