I dont believe there are any safety problems with doing it. Other than a loading problem with too much current if you have too many down stream of it. If the wiring is matched to the circuit breaker for the whole loop then you should be ok. Basically the GFCI just monitors that the current in the neutral is matched to the current in the hot side. any time there is an imbalance any where past the GFCI device it will trip it.
