Illinois Non-commercial Class B DL

I've been reading a couple threads here on the California and Texas testing processes, so I thought I'd ask if anyone had any experience with the testing process in Illinois. The Secretary of State's website was not exactly the model of clarity in determining whether it was even necessary, but I have now determined it is. I'm out of the country right now, but will need to take the test when I get back this spring.

Any guidance is appreciated.

Illinois Class C

My wife recently passed her tests and has a nice new Illinois Class C license. She says the driving test was easy. Illinois does not care about air brakes and has no air brake test (for non cdl). She did not have to back up or park between lines, just a short drive. I already have a IL class B. It cost her 5 dollars.

You do not have to take the written and driving on the same day. The written test has little to do with RV driving so memorize the trivia in the Illinois book and take the written first. I think you get 3 tries before one would have to pay another 5 dollars LOL.

Now she can drive and I just hold on !!! LOL

It is great not to have to do all of the driving.

Thanks, Bernie. After I get mine, the wife will get hers. She's already an accomplished RV driver. She actually took it out a few weeks ago on her own.

The air brake test was the big part of what I was wondering about. My brother has a CDL, so he could certainly tutor me, but it will be one less ting to worry about.

Illinois DL

Hi Scott,

I notice that you have a 36' coach. If the GVWR is more that 26000 lbs you will need a IL class B. The test is the same.
The class B (non CDL) is for farmers, firemen, and RV drivers. With a class B one can drive anything except a motorcycle or semi combination.
good luck

Yes, I was planning on a B. GVWR is a bit over 26K. Good to know the test is the same.

May I ask where your wife took her test? I've heard sometimes there are differences between larger cities and smaller town testing facilities. I could go to either Quad Cities (Silvis) or Kewanee.

class C

Hi,
She took the written in Joliet (I think) and the driving in Ottawa. I would recommend a rural location. I have been told that any Sec of state office can give the non cdl road test even if the location does not do CDL tests.
You have to find someone with a license classification that allows driving of class B or higher to go with you for the driving part.
If you go take the written first you will get a "learners permit" paper good for one year. The written is more difficult than the road test (she says). Study the book, items like weight limits on axles, allowable highway heights & widths, lighting rules, school bus rules, braking on grades, etc. even though most of the questions have nothing to do with RVs. I am told that there are about 18 questions on the test. I believe you have to get 15 of the 18 correct.

happy camping

Great! Thanks, Bernie. My brother has a CDL, so that should be no problem. I will probably do it in Kewanee.

Read the book a couple of times, the written is really no big deal, but the axle weights, flare/emergency marker placement, etc are the things to try and memorize. Its a multiple choice test, so common sense guessing will work on several questions. I took my test at the LaSalle office. Small, friendly, and again, no big deal. Drove around a little, had me back up about 20 feet, then we drove back. I purposely picked LaSalle because it was a small office. I would pick Kewanee over Quad Cities if I had my "druthers".

I will admit it felt good to walk out with the correct license and be "legal" after 7 years and 55,000 miles of thinking I was OK on my basic license!

Sounds like we have a plan. :-). 30 years ago when I was in high school, we had to pick between Kewanee and Rock Island to take our driving test. Everyone went to Kewanee because they didn't make you parallel park. The rumor was that Rock Island required parallel parking every other day so you had a 50/50 chance.

I remember I only made one mistake on the driving test: I turned left from a two lane onto a four lane road and turned into the right lane instead of the left. The examiner said, "don't worry, all the kids from Geneseo make that mistake because Geneseo doesn't have any four lane roads."
