Installing hydraulic lift to foam bay storage doors

I bought a few hydraulic lifts for my storage bay doors. I'm tired of them hitting me on the head and having to hold the door open with it resting on top of my head. I decided to get a few hydraulic lifts to solve the problem.

I bought the hardware and started installing. The inside mount install went well. I did not know the entire exterior door was laminated foam. I installed the bracket anyway and tried. Of course the screws pulled out of the foam.

I know I'm not the first with this issue so someone please show me how you fixed it.

Thanks a bunch.

Update

After doing more research it appears the only way to successfully make this work is by purchasing an expensive product called Hatchlift.

I went ahead and ordered 3. The small ones are $42 each.

Oh well.

When I installed mine, I added a sheet metal backer plate, approx 8x8" and pop riveted to the doors, inside.....still holding fine after 5 years....

Yes....as Bob stated, adding a plate such as heavy tin or SS, to distribute the pressure is the way to do it. Whenever I've installed a plate like this, I always add two sided tape to the back and then screw or rivet on.

This is what I had to order

Not cheap but hopefully it will work

Hatchlift RV Door Lift Kit for doors from 14" - 20" in height- Small

https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B007H2R9...ing=UTF8&psc=1

Amazon - $42.59 each

Camping World had them cheaper but took 2 weeks to deliver. Amazon, I get in 2 days with no shipping cost via my Prime but cost me $2.60 more each.

Purchased 7 on eBay for $175 delivered and 3 more on sale at CW and have installed 10 but the medium ones were more appropriate for my side mounted doors.

I use a cover plate for a square pull box as a backing plate. I already has holes in the corners, and I hold the bracket for the pneumatic lift on with self drilling screws.

Have you considered gluing a piece of 1/4” plywood to the door foam and attaching the lift bracket to it?
