Insurance - Which Options Are Most Valuable?
We are researching insurance for our Class A motorhome (Newmar Ventana) to be delivered later this year. We have received quotes from both Safeco and Progressive. What are thoughts on various insurance aspects:
- Individual limits (e.g. 100/300/50) versus combined single limit (300)
- Comprehensive that includes windshield coverage
- Awning coverage
- Roof Protection Plus (offered by Progressive)
- Vacation liability
Anything else we should consider?

Lots of posts on insurance, use the search tool
Like all insurance the first question is your overall finances: 1) how much could you comfortably pay in cash (for determining your deductible); 2) how much do you have to lose/what is your total net worth for determining your upper liability limit.
With that, you can easily decide on the various gimmicky coverages such as vacation coverage, windshield, roadside assistance, etc. some of which are available elsewhere and perhaps with better service than from the insurers.
We had Progressive for eleven years over two RVs and they just raised the premium by a third, so after bidding it around we went with State Farm which has all our other insurance. Only had two minor claims with Progressive and were satisfied with their assistance.

A good independent insurance agent would give you better advice than we can, other than to get a good independent agent.

You don't need "vacation liability" if you already have a home owners or renters policy, since those typically include personal liability coverage for any damage you may be personally liable for, even away from home.
Many RV policies include an amount for "personal property" and most things attached to or carried in the RV are considered "personal property". Discuss with the agent or company how your belongings in or on the RV are covered and what the limits are - it's often a relatively trivial amount like $2000 but it can be increased substantially for only a few dollars. Again, your homeowner or renter policy probably has some coverage for personal property away from home. Find out what that is too.
Combined liability has some slight advantages, but make sure the quote is apples-to-apples. For example, 100/300/50 has a combined max of $350k (300k injury + 50k property, while a combined $300k is just that. Combined coverage has some potential advantage when the limits are low, but if you are going higher, e.g. 250/1000/100, it probably doesn't make much difference cause you have enough to cover most any situation anyway.
I couldn't find any info on "Roof Protection Plus" but I would be wary. Sounds like a marketing ploy.

Consider using your home and auto insurance provider if they insure RV's. If they do not, consider changing insurance providers. Why? Because then you can add an Umbrella Policy to all liability limits on all policies for a minimal cost.
My $1,000,000 umbrella costs me $272 a year. If liability damages exceed the individual limit on the home or auto or RV policy the umbrella kicks in. So your $300,000 liability limit goes to $1,300,000. Think about killing someone(s) if the bad thing happens.
Motorists Mutual, a company we were VERY happy with would not insure an RV over 35' and of course we're at 38' so we switched to Westfield Group in Ohio. I've attached their PDF so you can see what it covers and does not cover. One thing was they only pay up to $500 for towing and we'll have a roadside assistance policy as well so that's not a big deal.
I have no affiliation with them except as a customer who has not yet had a claim.
HTH,
Ray

You might need 300/500 so that your Umbrella policy is in effect. Umbrella policies usually have a minimum amount that's needs to be covered before the Umbrella will provide coverage.

Good advice about an umbrella, but you don't have to have all things with one insurer to do that. We have motorhome and ATV with Progressive and home and autos with Chubb, and a Chubb umbrella over all.

My advice is to shop around on insurance, I found it amazing how much of a spread there was between various major companies for very comparable policies. In my case dealing with a 15 year old coach the spread between Allstate, Statefarm and Progressive was $550, $1,020, $1,590 respectively
