Inverter Buzzing?

Hey all....just trying to figure out what might cause our inverter to start a loud buzzing sound, intermittently when connected to shore power? It doesn't seem to do it all the time, but it certainly isn't right!

Thanks in advance for any input.

Your inverter likely has a solenoid that is to switch between shore power and inverter power. Perhaps yours is sticking.

I have switched power sources from land to gen and back and solved the buzzzzzz problem. Like BFlinn181 said, probably a solenoid sticking.

Is it also a charging inverter? If so, perhaps it hums when charging the batteries.

....or it doesn't know the words.

You could try disconnecting all power and opening up the inverter to try to file the contact points in the solenoid. A small, flat, file can sometimes be slide in between the contacts to clean them up. Some you can access, others are riveted together so the magic smoke doesn't escape.

I have found that mine buzzes differently based on ambient temperature, load and mode. It buzzes most when charging and when inverting. I installed a brand new one and it buzzes right out of the box. According to the manual that means it is operating...

It could also be the windings of the transformer inside your inverter / charger. If the windings come loose around the soft iron core of your main power transformer they can make an annoying 60 cycle hum.

With the power turned off you might be able to open the inverter / charger to expose the transformer. If the transformer is held together or onto the chassis of the inverter / charger by screws, you might be able to stop the humming by tightening the screws. I have also stopped transformers from humming by pouring epoxy glue onto the windings and into the spaces between the soft iron core and the windings.

Before you try any of these or try to replace anything, get a stick or piece of dowel and hold one end against a piece of suspect equipment and place your ear near or on the other end. You will be able to hear which piece is making that annoying noise pretty quickly as the sound is transmitted up the dowel to your ear..
